Chapter 12 - The Spotlight Falls

Three weeks after the wedding that broke the Hudson Valley, the front page of the New York Financial Journal carried a headline that didn't mention society weddings or charity balls at all.
VANCE TRUST FROZEN AMID FEDERAL PROBE INTO OFFSHORE ASSET STRIPPING.
Inside the Sterling Estate, the silence was no longer the oppressive, cold stillness of Evelyn Vance’s reign. It was the rich, productive quiet of a workspace. The east wing, once the private domain of the matriarch, had been cleared out. The antique French armoires and velvet settees had been moved to storage; in their place, long oak drafting tables covered in blueprints, timber tallies, and architectural sketches of the revived northern mills filled the high-ceilinged rooms.
Claire sat at the center table, wearing an ink-stained linen shirt and dark trousers, her hair pulled back into a practical knot.
The door opened without a knock.
Adrian walked in carrying two mugs of black coffee and a thick manila envelope bearing the red wax seal of the state district attorney’s office.
"It’s official," Adrian said, tossing the envelope onto the drafting table next to a pile of ledger sheets. "The court-appointed receiver has seized the offshore accounts. The $750,000 Evelyn transferred to Vanessa has been clawed back into the estate recovery fund as proceeds of fraud."
Claire didn't look up from her blueprints immediately. She finished drawing a precise architectural line with a brass-capped pen before looking at her husband.
"And Vanessa?"

"She’s moved back into her studio apartment in Queens," Adrian said, leaning against the edge of the table. "Her landlord called this morning asking if we knew anything about three bounced rent checks. Apparently, the boutique high-society crowd blacklisted her within forty-eight hours of the wedding video going viral on social media."
Claire gave a small, humorless shrug. "You can't buy class with stolen silk, Adrian. Some fabrics just reject the wearer."
