Chapter 15 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The dismantling of the old Vance empire was neither swift nor merciful; it was procedural, surgical, and absolute.
By mid-November, the federal prosecutors had unsealed the full indictment against Evelyn Vance. The charges weren't merely related to the clandestine wire transfer to Vanessa Reid; they reached back two decades into the murky liquidation of the Hudson Valley steel mills, uncovering a labyrinth of shell companies, falsified safety reports, and hidden pension funds that Evelyn had siphoned to maintain the illusion of untouchable aristocracy.
The Manhattan townhouses, the Hampton estates, the private art collections—all of it was cataloged by court-appointed receivers with blue clipboards and cold, professional indifference.
Evelyn was forced to vacate the limestone mansion on the cliffs above the Hudson. On a freezing Tuesday morning, wrapped in a black cashmere coat that looked remarkably ordinary without its matching diamond collar, she stood on the gravel driveway waiting for a standard yellow cab.

There was no crowd of reporters to document Evelyn’s fall. The press had already moved on to newer, shinier scandals in Silicon Valley. The departure of Evelyn Vance from the estate was as quiet and grey as the river fog that clung to the reeds below.

Claire turned away from the window. The room behind her was filled with the smell of fresh pine and ink—the real work of living had begun.
