Chapter 3 - The Second Skin

Ten minutes after Vanessa left, the heavy oak door of the suite opened again. This time it was Martha, Claire’s personal coordinator—a woman whose loyalty had been forged through years of managing high-society weddings where old money met new malice. Martha’s face was pale, her lips pressed into a hard white line. She held out a cracked smartphone, the screen glowing with a silent, looping security feed from the service corridor.

"They didn't think the cameras in the sub-basement wardrobe annex were active," Martha whispered, her voice shaking with restrained fury. "Evelyn unlocked the door with her master key at 7:15 AM. Your sister was right behind her. They took the ivory gown, Claire. They loaded it into the back of Evelyn’s town car."

Claire stood up from the vanity. She walked over to the wrought-iron stand and unzipped the second garment bag—the one containing the rose-pink satin gown. She ran her hand over the heavy, luminous fabric, feeling the secret weight of the construction beneath her fingers.

"I know, Martha," Claire said softly.

"You knew?" Martha stared at her, her eyes wide behind her tortoiseshell glasses. "You knew they were going to steal your wedding dress? Claire, that gown cost—"

"More than most people make in three years," Claire finished for her. She pulled the rose-pink gown from its hanger and laid it across the bed. "And it’s worthless to anyone who doesn't know how to wear it. But the ivory one… that’s a different story. That one is weighted with history."

Martha swallowed hard, stepping closer. "What are you going to do? The ceremony is in forty minutes. If you walk down the aisle in pink, society will tear you apart. They’ll say you broke down. They’ll say you were unfit."

"Let them," Claire said, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corners of her mouth. "A bride in white represents purity, submission, tradition. A bride in rose-pink satin represents a warning. And Martha? Make sure the technical crew in the AV booth has the flash drive I gave you last night. Exactly at twelve-fifteen. Not a second sooner."

"The drive with the bank records?" Martha asked, her breath catching.

"The very same," Claire replied, stepping into the stiff, rustling petticoats of the rose-pink gown. "Let’s see how well ivory satin hides a paper trail."
