Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Silence

Stitched across the silk lining, rendered in unmistakable gold thread by the master artisans of Paris, were the banking transaction numbers, dates, and signature lines of an offshore wire transfer:
ACCOUNT OF EVELYN VANCE TO VANESSA REID — $750,000. FOR THE ACQUISITION OF THE STERLING ESTATE TRUST & CANCELLATION OF NUPTIAL AGREEMENT.
The ballroom was so silent that the distant drip of an ice cube into a champagne flute in the gallery pantry echoed like a gunshot.
"What is this?" Adrian asked. His voice was dead, flat, hollowed out from within, sounding like a man standing inside an empty stone vault. "Mother... Vanessa... what is this?"
Vanessa frantically tried to kick the heavy silk behind her, attempting to obscure the golden embroidery with her heels, but the cathedral train was pinned securely under Claire’s satin slipper. The fabric bunched awkwardly around Vanessa’s narrow frame—the gown had never been tailored to fit her, and now it sagged and twisted, a ridiculous, oversized stolen shroud that mocked every grand illusion she had ever harbored.
"It’s not what she's making it seem, Adrian," Evelyn said, stepping forward past the orchids, though her immaculate composure was crumbling at the edges like old mortar. "I was protecting you. She came from nothing. Her family has been clawing at our gates since the day you introduced her. I only did what any mother of our standing would do to secure the family legacy."
"By paying my sister three-quarters of a million dollars to slip a forged addendum into my prenuptial agreement?" Claire asked calmly, smoothing the lustrous rose-pink satin of her skirt with one gloved hand. "By paying her to sign over the land my grandfather left behind, so your family’s investment firm could break ground without public scrutiny?"
Three weeks ago, outside that half-open study door, Claire hadn't just heard Evelyn mock her body. She had heard them finalize the payout. Vanessa had been feeding Evelyn private documents from Claire’s study for months, convinced that if she played the obedient, elegant, compliant socialite, Evelyn would welcome her into the inner circle and discard Claire like an old glove. Evelyn had promised her prestige, society introductions, and a life she felt Claire didn't deserve.
"You took her money, Vanessa," Claire said softly, looking her sister straight in the eye with a gaze that brooked no escape. "And you agreed to wear my dress so I would look like an unstable bride having a breakdown in her dressing room, giving your lawyers grounds to contest my mental capacity."

"Claire, please—she told me you were going to ruin our family name!" Vanessa whimpered, dropping the crushed orchids onto the floor where they smeared against the marble. "She said if you married him, his family would cut us off completely! I had to protect us!"
"You protected your bank account," Claire replied. "And you looked so eager to step into my life that you didn't even notice the weight of the silk."
