Chapter 12 - Echoes of the Past

That evening, after the boardroom doors had sealed shut and the regional directors had scattered back to their respective territories like frightened mice, Dominic and I retreated to the private penthouse suite. The sprawling glass-walled living room overlooked the glittering, electric grid of Manhattan, a dizzying sea of yellow headlights and neon signs piercing the autumn dusk.

Marcus was fast asleep in his adjoining bedroom, exhausted from an afternoon spent playing with a miniature fleet of remote-controlled cars gifted by Dante Moretti.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, resting my forehead briefly against the cool, vibration-free glass. The exhaustion of the day was finally catching up to me, pulling at the corners of my shoulders like lead weights.

Footsteps padded softly across the hardwood floor behind me. A moment later, familiar, heavy arms wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me backward into a solid, warm chest. Dominic rested his chin softly against the crook of my neck, his breath warm against my skin.

"You obliterated them in there," Dominic murmured, a low rumble of genuine pride vibrating through his chest. "Rossi almost swallowed his own tongue."

A soft, breathless laugh escaped my lips as I leaned back against him, letting my eyes drift closed. "He deserved it. Men like that only understand power. They look at a woman and assume weakness."

"They're fools," Dominic said fiercely, turning me gently in his arms so I was facing him. His slate-gray eyes searched my face in the dim amber light of the penthouse. He reached up, his calloused thumb gently tracing the line of my jawbone. "You saved my empire before you even worked for it, Clara. Everything I have now—my hearing, my focus, this family—it all traces back to a terrified mother walking into an estate conservatory with a box of crayons."

"Sometimes I still think about that night," I whispered, looking up into his intense, weathered face. "If Marcus hadn't wandered off... if Victor Strand hadn't humiliated me in front of those guests... we would still be trapped in that cramped apartment in Queens, counting pennies for groceries."

"Victor got what he deserved," Dominic said darkly, his jaw tightening at the mere mention of his former estate manager. "And you are never going back to that life."

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone resting on the minimalist coffee table chimed with a sharp, double-beep. It wasn't the standard ringtone for domestic estate calls. It was the high-priority red alert channel reserved exclusively for Dante Moretti and deep-cover intelligence feeds.

Dominic’s eyes flicked toward the table, the tender warmth in his expression instantly vanishing, replaced once more by the calculating gaze of an apex predator. He released me, crossed the room in two swift strides, and snatched the device from the polished wood.

He pressed the speakerphone icon. "Report."

Dante’s voice crackled through the tiny speaker, laced with a tight, dangerous urgency that made the hair on the back of my arms stand up. "Boss, we just intercepted an encrypted wire transfer originating from a Swiss shell corporation. It’s tied directly to the remnants of the Sicilian syndicate out of Syracuse. They're mobilizing."

Dominic stared down at the glowing screen, his voice eerily calm. "What are they mobilizing for?"

May you like

"They aren't targeting our shipping lanes or our money, Boss," Dante said, his voice dropping to a grim whisper. "They found out about the boy. They know about the touch that healed your hearing. They're sending a extraction team to Manhattan. They want the kid."
