Chapter 15 - Dawn of a New Dynasty

"Dante!" Dominic barked, dropping the bruised operative like a sack of garbage and spinning toward his lieutenant. "Status report on the Upstate estate—now!"

Dante whipped out his encrypted satellite tablet, his fingers flying frantically across the glass screen. The color drained entirely from Dante’s face as the secure status feeds loaded.

"Boss... perimeter sensors in Sector One and Sector Two just went dark simultaneously," Dante reported, his voice tight with sudden panic. "A secondary Syracuse strike team bypassed the main gates while our primary security forces were anchored here in Manhattan."

Ice water rushed through my veins. Marcus was up at the Upstate estate, sleeping peacefully in his oversized mahogany bed, surrounded by the quiet hills of New York.

"Get the helicopter on the pad," Dominic ordered, his voice carrying the terrifying, supersonic speed of a man possessed. "We fly north immediately."

Within ten minutes, the twin-engine private Sikorsky helicopter lifted off the rooftop pad of the Manhattan tower, cutting through the starless night sky like a predatory bird. The city lights blurred beneath us into a dizzying streak of amber and neon as we pushed the aircraft past its maximum cruising speed, racing against time.

The flight felt agonizingly slow. Every second ticked past like an hour. I sat beside Dominic in the cramped cockpit, my knuckles white as I clutched the armrests of my seat, praying to any god that would listen that we weren't too late.

As the helicopter banked sharply over the rolling hills of Upstate New York, the sprawling, fortress-like silhouette of the Cray estate came into view.

To our horror, thick plumes of dark smoke were billowing from the western service wing.

"They breached the conservatory," Dante muttered from the co-pilot seat, unlatching his tactical rifle.

The helicopter touched down hard on the sprawling stone patio before the rotors had even finished spinning. Dominic didn't wait for the landing gear to stabilize; he kicked open the cabin door and leaped onto the stone, his tactical pistol drawn and ready. I was right behind him, my own weapon raised, my heart pounding in my ears.

We burst through the double glass doors of the conservatory. The tropical flora was shredded, broken leaves and shattered glass littering the stone floor. Standing in the center of the room were two armed Sicilian operatives, holding a terrified, crying Marcus wrapped in a heavy blanket.

"Drop your weapons!" the lead operative screamed, pressing the cold barrel of a pistol against three-year-old Marcus’s temple. "Drop them or the kid gets a bullet right now!"

Time seemed to grind to an absolute halt.

My breath caught in my throat. A piercing, agonizing scream tore itself from my chest. "No! Don't touch him!"

Dominic stopped dead in his tracks. The tactical pistol in his hand lowered by an inch. For a second, the invincible syndicate boss—the ghost who ruled the tri-state network—looked entirely human, paralyzed by the one vulnerability he had never anticipated.

Then, Dominic smiled. It wasn't a warm smile. It was a cold, terrifying, beautiful grin of pure, unadulterated finality.

"You shouldn't have come here," Dominic whispered.

Before the operative could squeeze the trigger, Dominic moved with blinding, supernatural speed—faster than human reaction time. He didn't aim for the operative's chest. With a flick of his wrist, he fired a single, perfectly calculated round that struck the operative's weapon barrel, shattering the gun into a million jagged pieces of hot metal.

As the man shrieked in shock, clutching his bleeding hand, Dante and the security team swarmed the room from the side corridors, tackling both operatives to the floor in a flurry of tactical boots and heavy thuds.

I dropped my weapon, rushed forward, and scooped Marcus out of the wreckage, pulling him fiercely against my chest as he sobbed into my shoulder. "Mommy's here, sweetie. Mommy's got you. You're safe."

Footsteps echoed softly across the shattered glass.

Dominic walked over, his tactical pistol holstered, his face softening completely as he looked down at the two of us. He reached out, gently stroking Marcus’s tear-stained cheek before his slate-gray eyes rose to meet mine, filled with an ocean of fierce, unbreakable devotion.

The Syracuse council was dismantled by dawn. The tri-state syndicate network learned once and for all that the Cray dynasty was untouchable.

Standing together on the stone patio as the golden autumn sun broke over the rolling hills of Upstate New York, bathing the estate in a warm, eternal light, I knew that the shadows of our past were gone forever. We had forged an empire out of fire, and we were finally home.
