Chapter 4 - The Cry of Accusation

The transition from elegance to sheer chaos happened within seconds.
The grand ballroom filled up once more, the air buzzing with lively discussion about the foundation’s ambitious plans for the coming year. Waiters circulated with silver platters of chocolate truffles and miniature lemon tarts. Sebastián stood by the large stone fireplace on the northern wall, trapped in an inescapable conversation with the city’s deputy mayor, though his eyes constantly darted across the crowd, searching for Emma.
Emma remained near table six, her back mostly turned to the main crowd, meticulously sorting dirty glasses into the plastic bins on her cart.
Suddenly, a piercing, theatrical shriek ripped through the salon.
"My bracelet! Merciful God, my bracelet!"
The sound sliced through the chamber music like a guillotine. The orchestra ground to a chaotic halt, the violinists lowering their bows in confusion. Conversations cut off mid-sentence. Within two seconds, a suffocating silence gripped the three hundred guests.
In the center of the ballroom, standing beneath the direct spotlight of the central chandelier, Victoria Montenegro was clutching her bare left wrist. Her face was pale, her chest heaving dramatically as if she were about to collapse.
"Mother?" Sebastián’s voice broke the silence first. He pushed his way through the cluster of dignitaries, rushing toward her with furrowed brows. "What is it? What happened?"
"It’s gone!" Victoria cried out, her voice trembling with perfect theatrical despair, projecting into every corner of the vast room. She turned her bare wrist toward the guests, displaying the empty velvet skin where the legendary diamond cuff had sat only half an hour earlier. "The Montenegro Solitaire! My late husband's heirloom! It was on my arm when I went to the terrace, and now... it’s gone!"
A collective gasp swept through the high-society crowd.
"Victoria, are you sure?" Sofia Delgado asked, rushing to her side with wide eyes. "Perhaps the clasp failed? Perhaps it fell on the terrace lawn?"
"No! No, the safety latch was custom-made in Switzerland; it cannot open on its own!" Victoria sobbed, pressing a manicured hand against her forehead, swaying slightly so that Sebastián had to grab her arm to steady her. "Someone unclasped it! Someone took it right off my person during the crowd crush by the terrace doors!"
"Nobody panic," an older gentleman, a prominent federal judge, called out in an authoritative voice. "Victoria, let’s have the doors closed. If it fell, it’s somewhere on the grounds."
"It didn't fall!" Victoria shrieked, her voice suddenly turning sharp, cutting through the murmurs. "I felt a hand! Someone bumped into me near the service alcove just before I walked outside! I thought it was an accident, but now..." She turned her tear-streaked face toward the crowd, her eyes wide with manufactured betrayal. "Someone in this house has stolen my husband’s legacy!"
The room erupted into an ocean of murmurs.
"Good heavens, at a charity event?"
"How vulgar!"
"Who could have done such a thing?"
"Lock the doors!" someone shouted. "Call the police!"
From the rear corridor, two armed private security guards in dark suits moved forward, locking the heavy mahogany main doors. The atmosphere, once celebratory and warm, turned instantly frigid and paranoid. Guests began looking at one another with suspicion, pulling their evening clutches tighter to their sides.
Emma stood completely rigid beside her cart at the edge of the room. Her mouth was dry, her blood running cold as ice. The memory of Victoria’s whispered words from fifteen minutes earlier echoed in her ears with deafening clarity: *When you leave this house, you will leave in iron.*
*No,* Emma thought, her stomach twisting into a knot of sheer terror. *No, she wouldn't. She couldn't.*
"Mother, calm down," Sebastián said, his voice firm, trying to restore order. "If the bracelet is missing, we will search the terrace thoroughly. We will look under the tables. We don't need to turn this evening into an interrogation."
"Calm down?!" Victoria rounded on her son, her voice shrill with outrage. "That piece is worth a quarter of a million dollars, Sebastián! It is your family's heritage! And you want me to calm down while a common thief walks among our guests?"
She turned toward the guards stationed at the doors.
"Search everyone if you must! But start with the service staff! They are the only ones who had access to the private hallways and the perimeter during the terrace presentation!"
"Mother, that is unacceptable," Sebastián snapped, his jaw tightening, anger finally breaking through his polite facade. "You cannot accuse our employees without a shred of evidence. These people have worked for us for years—"
"I don't care about years, I care about my property!" Victoria yelled, tears of rage spilling down her cheeks. "Security! Search every cart, every tray, and every apron in this room right now!"
The guests stepped back, parting like the Red Sea as one of Victoria’s personal bodyguards—a hulking man named Ramos, whom Victoria had hired separately from Tomás’s security detail—marched purposefully into the center of the ballroom. Ramos didn't look at the other servers. His eyes were locked with laser focus onto a single target.
He walked past the wine station. He walked past the dessert tables.
He stopped directly in front of Emma’s service cart.
Emma’s breath hitched. She looked at Ramos, then across the room at Victoria. Victoria was watching with a faint, almost imperceptible twitch of her lips—a predator watching the snare snap shut.
"Hands on your apron where I can see them, miss," Ramos barked loudly, drawing the eyes of every single guest in the grand salon directly toward Emma.
"I didn't touch anything," Emma whispered, her voice trembling despite her desperate attempt to maintain control. "I’ve been clearing glasses—"
"Step back from the cart," Ramos ordered, his voice booming across the silent room.
Sebastián took three long strides forward, breaking away from his mother. "Ramos, stand down! What the hell do you think you’re doing?"
"Just following orders, Señor Sebastián," Ramos said smoothly.
Without waiting for another word, the guard reached down to the middle tier of Emma’s cart. He shoved aside a stack of clean white service towels, dug his hand past the bin of dirty champagne glasses, and reached into the deep canvas pocket on the cart's side frame—a pocket used exclusively for holding clean duster cloths.
Ramos’s hand emerged.
In his thick, leather-gloved fingers, he held a small, black velvet drawstring pouch.
The entire ballroom inhaled a collective breath of pure shock.
Ramos pulled the drawstring open and inverted the pouch.
Under the dazzling white light of the Venetian chandeliers, seven carats of flawless diamonds tumbled into his palm, the platinum cuff glinting with blinding, undeniable brilliance.
The *Montenegro Solitaire*.
A deafening gasp ripped through the crowd.

"Found it," Ramos said coldly, turning toward Victoria. "Hidden deep in the pocket of Emma Vance's cart."
