Chapter 5 - Humiliation Before the Elite

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

For three agonizing seconds, nobody breathed. The three hundred elite guests of the city stared at the glittering platinum cuff resting in the security guard’s palm, then turned their collective gaze toward Emma.

In an instant, the gentle, hardworking maid they had seen serving their drinks for years ceased to exist. In their eyes, she transformed into an ungrateful, low-class criminal who had dared to bite the hand that fed her.

"I knew it," a woman in the front row hissed, clutching her pearls. "You can never trust these people. Give them a uniform and a fair wage, and they steal the family jewels."

"Disgusting," another man sneered, shaking his head. "To steal from your employer during a charity gala. She should rot in prison."

Phones began to appear from silk evening clutches and tuxedo pockets. Guests lifted their screens, pointing their camera lenses directly at Emma’s face, eager to capture the sensational downfall of the Montenegro family’s housemaid for their private group chats and social media circles.

Emma felt the blood drain entirely from her face. Her ears rang with a high-pitched whine. The grand ballroom seemed to spin around her, the glittering lights blurring into streaks of sickening gold and white.

"No..." Emma’s voice broke as she shook her head frantically, stepping back until her spine hit the edge of the service cart. "No! I didn't touch it! I swear on my life, I didn't put that there!"

"The evidence is right in front of us, thief!" Victoria shouted, stepping forward through the parted crowd, her face a mask of wounded aristocratic pride and venomous triumph.

"Señora Victoria, please!" Emma pleaded, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes, tracing hot paths down her pale cheeks. "You were in here! You spoke to me just minutes ago! You know I didn't steal it!"

Victoria stopped five feet away, her eyes widening with rehearsed, devastating shock.

"Are you daring to blame *me*?" Victoria cried out to the room, placing a trembling hand against her chest. "After everything I have done for you? I opened the doors of my home to you when your family had nothing! I gave you employment, I treated you with dignity, and this is how you repay my generosity? By robbing me blind and lying to my face in front of the finest people in this city?"

"I am not lying!" Emma sobbed, her chest heaving as she looked desperately around the circle of onlookers. "Please! Someone believe me! I have worked here for five years! Have I ever stolen a single coin? Have I ever taken anything from this house?"

Nobody spoke.

The socialites looked at her with curled lips and cold, condemning eyes. Friends who had smiled at Emma when she served them hors d’oeuvres an hour earlier now looked at her with pure disgust. In the arena of high society, an accusation from Victoria Montenegro was equivalent to a divine verdict.

"Emma..."

The voice was shattered, hollow, and full of agony.

Emma turned her tear-filled eyes toward Sebastián.

He was standing frozen near the centerpiece table. His face was ghostly pale, his hands trembling at his sides. His amber eyes, usually so full of warmth and silent affection, were wide with a horrifying mixture of confusion, shock, and mounting betrayal.

"Sebastián," Emma choked out, reaching a trembling hand toward him across the void. "Sebastián, please. You know me. Look at me. Look into my eyes! Do you truly believe I could do this? Do you truly believe I am a thief?"

Sebastián looked from her pleading eyes down to the glittering diamond bracelet in Ramos's hand, then back to Emma. The evidence seemed impossible to deny. The bracelet hadn't been dropped on the carpet; it had been concealed inside the hidden canvas compartment of her own workstation.

"How could it be there, Emma?" Sebastián’s voice cracked, a devastating whisper that carried across the hushed room. "How could it possibly be in your cart?"

His doubt felt like a physical blow to her heart. Emma felt something shatter deep inside her chest—a fragile, hopeful dream that had secretly sustained her through years of exhausting labor.

He didn't trust her. When the fire came, his aristocratic blood saw only what it was trained to see: a servant caught with stolen gold.

Victoria saw the hesitation break in her son's eyes and moved in for the final kill.

"Don't listen to her wicked lies, Sebastián!" Victoria commanded, her voice ringing with maternal authority. "She used your kindness! She took advantage of your gentle heart! She played the innocent victim while stuffing our family’s legacy into her dirty apron!"

Victoria turned sharply toward Ramos and the second security guard.

"Call the police immediately! And until the squad cars arrive, get this thieving creature out of my sight! Drag her down to the holding room! *Llévensela!*"

Ramos lunged forward, his thick fingers reaching out to grab Emma’s slender wrist.

"Don't touch me!" Emma screamed, pulling her arms back, fighting to preserve the last shred of her dignity. "Do not put your hands on me!"

The second guard moved in, grabbing Emma roughly by the shoulder, spinning her around toward the service exit. The room erupted into a cacophony of camera shutters clicking, whispered insults, and Victoria’s shrill, victorious weeping.

Emma looked at Sebastián one last time through her blinding tears. He was looking down at the marble floor, his fists clenched, his shoulders slumped under the weight of utter disillusionment.

She was completely alone. Her life was destroyed. Her father’s medical bills would go unpaid, her name dragged through the gutter, her future erased in a single night of engineered cruelty.

Just as the guards dragged Emma to the heavy archway leading to the back corridor, a deep, thunderous voice shattered the commotion.

"HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!"

The guards stopped dead in their tracks.

Every head in the grand salon turned toward the double entrance doors.

Standing in the doorway, blocking the exit, was Don Tomás. The old security chief stood tall, his jaw set like granite, holding an electronic control tablet firmly in his hands.
