Chapter 7 - The Video on the Wall

The screen lit up with crisp, four-kilohannel 4K resolution. The timestamp in the lower right-hand corner read: *20:41:12 PM*—precisely twenty minutes earlier, while the bulk of the guests were gathered on the southern terrace for Victoria’s speech.

The camera angle was high, mounted discreetly within the carved plaster acanthus leaves above the ballroom’s east entrance. It provided an unhindered, panoramic view of table six, the curtained alcove, and Emma’s rolling service cart.

Three hundred pairs of eyes locked onto the screen in dead silence.

The footage began playing smoothly.

On the screen, Emma Vance was visible working alone. She was methodically picking up dirty champagne flutes, clearing the linen napkins, and placing them into the plastic bins on the cart. Her movements were calm, focused, and entirely professional.

Then, the heavy velvet curtain on the left of the frame moved.

A figure slipped into the room.

The gasps from the guests were immediate, sharp, and universal.

It was Victoria Montenegro.

On the screen, Victoria stepped out from behind the curtain, looking around like a nervous burglar. She glanced toward the French doors leading to the terrace. She checked both sides of the corridor. Her face, captured in pristine, unyielding digital clarity, was twisted into a tight, malevolent grimace.

The audio from the feed, enhanced through the ballroom’s surround sound speakers, picked up the faint click of her heels and the rustle of her emerald gown.

On the screen, Victoria approached the empty service cart while Emma was momentarily bent down near table six, retrieving a dropped napkin beneath the tablecloth.

Victoria’s right hand moved to her left wrist.

With swift, practiced fingers, Victoria unclasped the legendary *Montenegro Solitaire Bracelet*.

The seven-carat diamonds flashed briefly under the camera's night-vision sensor.

Victoria didn't drop it. She didn't lose it.

She held the platinum cuff in her palm, reached into the small black velvet pouch she had pulled from her own evening purse, and shoved the pouch deep into the side canvas compartment of Emma’s cart.

She pressed down on the pocket, smoothing the fabric so the bulge was completely hidden beneath the clean duster rags.

Then, she stepped back.

She took three deep breaths, adjusted the diamond studs on her ears, smoothed the front of her velvet gown, and cast one final, venomous smirk toward the unaware maid before slipping back through the curtain.

*20:43:05 PM.*

The video clip ended, freezing on the crystal-clear still frame of Victoria’s hand stuffing the velvet pouch into Emma’s cart.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

It was not the silence of polite decorum. It was the absolute, crushing silence of an empire collapsing in real-time.

Nobody moved. Nobody whispered.

The socialites who had just minutes ago laughed and recorded Emma’s humiliation now stood frozen, their mouths agape, their champagne flutes trembling in their hands. The federal judge stared at the screen with an expression of profound disgust. Sofia Delgado took a slow, deliberate step away from Victoria, as if the woman beside her were covered in plague.

Emma collapsed to her knees.

The release of tension was so violent that her legs simply gave out. She buried her face in her apron, her shoulders shaking violently as sobs of overwhelming, exhausting relief tore through her chest.

She wasn't a thief. She was free.

Ramos, the security guard who had gripped Emma's arm with such brutal force, immediately released her as if she were burning iron. He stepped back, his head lowered in deep, cowardly shame.

Tomás lowered the tablet. He looked across the room at his employer of twenty years, his voice cold, steady, and resolute.

"That video file has already been duplicated to off-site cloud servers, Señora. And a copy has just been transmitted to the municipal police precinct to clear Emma Vance of any wrongdoing."

Victoria Montenegro stood completely alone in the center of the grand salon.

Her breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. Her eyes were wide, wild, and darting around the room, searching desperately for a single friendly face, a single ally, a single person among her three hundred 'friends' who would step forward to defend her.

There was no one.

"That’s... that’s out of context," Victoria stammered, her voice cracking, sounding weak, pathetic, and entirely hollow. "The video... it doesn't show... you don't understand what she was trying to do to this family!"

"Out of context?" a loud, aristocratic voice boomed from the third row of guests. It was the Duchess of Valenzuela, Victoria's oldest and most powerful social rival. The woman stepped forward, her face curling in utter revulsion. "We saw your own hands plant the jewelry, Victoria. You staged a felony to destroy an innocent child."

"No! She seduced my son! She is a calculating gold-digger!" Victoria shrieked, her voice degenerating into an unhinged scream that shattered whatever remained of her dignity. "She forced my hand!"

"Shut up."

The words were not loud. They were not shouted.

They were spoken in a low, gravelly whisper that carried the terrifying weight of an avalanche.

May you like

Sebastián stepped forward.
