Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Mask

The sudden entrance of the security chief cut through the chaos like a flare in the dark.
Victoria Montenegro’s theatrical weeping ceased instantly. Her head snapped toward the doorway, her manicured eyebrows knitting together in sharp annoyance.
"Tomás," Victoria snapped, wiping away imaginary tears with the back of her hand, her tone hardening into pure command. "What is the meaning of this interruption? The thief has been caught red-handed. Take her down to the gatehouse and wait for the police."
Tomás did not move. He did not bow, nor did he avert his eyes. He stood like an iron pillar beneath the arched entrance, his dark eyes burning with a cold, righteous intensity that made several guests near the front shift uncomfortably.
"With all due respect, Señora," Tomás said, his voice deep, gravelly, and echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Nobody is leaving this room. And nobody is putting cuffs on Emma Vance."
A murmur of shock rippled through the guests.
"Are you insane?" Victoria hissed, her voice rising an octave. "You are an employee of this estate! I pay your salary! You take your orders from me, not from that lying girl!"
"Mother, wait," Sebastián said, taking a step toward Tomás. His voice was raw, his eyes searching the older man's face. "Tomás, what are you talking about? Ramos found the bracelet. It was inside Emma’s cart."
Tomás looked at the young heir, his expression softening with a mixture of pity and grave seriousness. "I know where it was found, Señor Sebastián. But finding something in someone's possession doesn't tell you how it got there."
"What ridiculous nonsense is this?!" Victoria shouted, stepping forward, her composure visibly fraying at the edges. A tiny bead of sweat broke through her hairline. "Are you implying my security team planted it? Ramos has served this family for three years!"
"I am not implying anything about Ramos, Señora," Tomás replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I am talking about the truth."
"I don't have to listen to this insubordination!" Victoria turned to Ramos, pointing a shaking, crimson-tipped finger toward Emma. "Ramos, do your job! Drag her out of here now! If the chief wants to lose his pension tonight, he can join her in the unemployment line!"
Ramos tightened his grip on Emma’s arm, pulling her forward. Emma winced in pain, but before Ramos could take another step, Tomás lifted his left hand and touched a button on his radio.
"Gates team, lock the perimeter. Seal all salon doors. Nobody in, nobody out," Tomás commanded over the open frequency.
The heavy motorized locks on the mahogany doors engaged with a loud, resounding *CLACK* that echoed through the ballroom. Several guests gasped in alarm.
"Tomás, explain yourself right now!" Sebastián demanded, stepping between Ramos and Emma. His protective instinct had flared back to life the moment he saw the conviction in the old guard's eyes. "What do you know?"
"I have managed the security systems of this estate for twenty-two years, Señor Sebastián," Tomás said, walking slowly into the center of the ballroom, his polished boots clicking rhythmically against the marble. "Your late father installed over eighty high-definition digital cameras across this property. He taught me that in a world of wealth and envy, human words are cheap, but the lens never lies."
Victoria’s breath caught sharply. Her pale skin turned an ashen shade of grey. The arrogant, triumphant mask she had worn for the past ten minutes suddenly began to crack, revealing the sheer panic underneath.
"The... the cameras in the service area are offline," Victoria stammered, the words slipping out before she could stop herself.
The entire room froze.
Several prominent guests—judges, lawyers, and seasoned corporate executives—narrowed their eyes at Victoria’s slip.
How did the mistress of the mansion know the service cameras were supposedly offline?
Tomás stopped five paces from Victoria and offered a cold, humorless smile.
"You're referring to camera cluster four, Señora," Tomás said smoothly, holding up the tablet. "The one near the east pantry. You requested maintenance to shut down that specific feed yesterday afternoon, claiming the cables needed replacement before the gala."
Victoria’s chest rose and fell rapidly. "I... it was a routine maintenance request!"
"It was," Tomás agreed calmly. "And maintenance complied. But what you didn't know—what no one outside of my primary security console knows—is that three months ago, your late husband’s insurance company mandated the installation of redundant, motion-activated micro-lenses in the ornamental mouldings of every single reception room. Including the service alcoves."
The color drained completely from Victoria's lips. Her fingers began to twitch violently at her side.
"You had no right..." she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"My duty is to protect the integrity of this estate, Señora," Tomás replied with lethal politeness. "Not to protect lies."
Tomás turned toward the massive 85-inch flat-screen display mounted on the northern wall—the same screen intended to display the Montenegro Foundation's charity slideshow. He lifted the tablet in his hand, entered a four-digit bypass code, and synced the device to the salon's media network.
"Tomás, stop this!" Victoria shrieked, lunging forward, completely abandoning her aristocratic poise. "I forbid you! Turn that off! I will have you arrested! I will destroy you!"
"Mother, step back!" Sebastián’s voice roared like a lion.
He stepped directly into his mother’s path, his tall frame blocking her from reaching Tomás. Sebastián’s face was dark, thunderous, and filled with a terrifying, mounting realization.
"Let him play it," Sebastián whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion so raw it shook the room. "If Emma is guilty, the screen will prove it. But if she is innocent... God help you, Mother. Let him play it."
Tomás tapped the screen.
