Chapter 10 - The Foundation of Tomorrow

Penny stood in silence on the porch for three long seconds, weighing the heavy envelope in her hand against the quiet, predictable life she had built on the South Side. She looked past Dominic's shoulder, watching the federal SUV idling quietly by the curb, then looked down at her bandaged hand—the hand that had smashed a billionaire's floodlight and shattered a multi-million-dollar conspiracy with a single, furious swing of her father's wrench. She looked back up, a confident, knowing smile spreading across her face. "Double my rates?" Penny asked, raising an eyebrow playfully. "Mr. Moretti, for the kind of mess Mercer left behind in your network, you couldn't afford to pay me double unless you liquidated at least one of those downtown office towers." Dominic’s smile widened, bright and unreserved, completely transforming the formidable North Shore mogul into a man who had finally found peace after years of darkness. He extended his hand across the threshold—not to command, not to threaten, but in an equal, respectful gesture of partnership. "Name your number, Ms. Hodge. I'm a very wealthy man, and I intend to keep it that way—safely." Penny uncrossed her arms, gripped his hand firmly, and shook it with a strength that left no doubt about who was running the circuit now. "Deal," she said, her voice ringing clear and strong in the morning air. Behind them, the federal SUV flashed its headlights in a quiet salute, and down the street, the Chicago skyline stretched endlessly toward a brilliant, cloudless sky. The nightmare in the North Shore mansion was finally over, the traitors were behind bars, and as Dominic Moretti turned to escort his new Chief Director to the Maybach, both of them knew that no one would ever plunge them into darkness again.
