Chapter 15 - The New Circuit

The sun began its slow, majestic descent over the Chicago skyline, painting the vast expanse of Lake Michigan in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold. From the sweeping second-floor balcony of the Moretti estate, the view stretched endlessly across the North Shore—a landscape that had once felt like an isolated cage of shadows and paranoia, but now felt like a stronghold of absolute peace and unyielding strength.

Penny Hodge stood leaning against the polished iron railing, taking a slow sip from a cup of strong, black coffee. Beside her, Dominic leaned casually against the stone pillar, his dark eyes occasionally shifting from the horizon down to the woman who had single-handedly rewired his entire existence.

The federal unmarked SUVs that had parked outside the iron gates for days had finally packed up and departed, leaving the estate in quiet, undisturbed tranquility. The dark chapter of Caleb Mercer’s betrayal and Marcus Vance’s corporate sabotage was officially closed, relegated to the history books of Chicago’s ruthless corporate battlegrounds. But inside the limestone fortress, a brand-new foundation had been poured—one built not on fear, isolation, and locked doors, but on absolute trust, shared strength, and an unbreakable partnership.

"You know, my mother is still convinced I'm working undercover for the CIA," Penny said suddenly, breaking the quiet evening air with a light, melodic laugh. "She keeps asking when the witness protection van is coming back to pick me up from the South Side bungalow."

Dominic smiled, sliding his hands into the pockets of his trousers as he turned his head to look at her. "If your mother ever decides she wants to move out of the South Side, the guest house on the north wing has entirely updated electrical wiring, triple-paned security glass, and a kitchen that could feed an army."

Penny turned her head, raising an eyebrow at him with a playful smirk. "Are you offering my mother permanent residence in your North Shore fortress, Mr. Moretti? That's a bold move for a man who used to have a strict 'no visitors after midnight' rule."

"Rules change," Dominic said smoothly, his gaze never leaving her face. "Especially when the right person comes along and rewires the entire system."

Penny let out a soft, genuine laugh, the tension of the past grueling weeks completely melting away under the warm evening breeze. She uncrossed her arms, gently bumping her shoulder against his in a gesture of easy, equal camaraderie.

Down below, the courtyard floodlight—the very one she had smashed with her father's wrench just days ago—shone brightly against the stone pathway, casting a clean, steady, unwavering beam of light across the immaculate grounds. No flickering strobe lights. No hidden backdoors. Just pure, clean electricity flowing safely through a circuit built to last.

Dominic lifted his hand from his pocket and extended it toward her across the balcony gap—not with the cold authority of a billionaire mogul, but in a quiet, firm gesture of an equal partner ready to face whatever tomorrow brought.

Penny looked down at his outstretched hand for a brief second, a victorious, knowing smile spreading across her face. Without a moment's hesitation, she gripped his hand firmly, her grip strong, confident, and steady.

"The circuit's stable, boss," Penny said, her voice ringing clear and strong in the evening air.

Dominic’s grip tightened around hers, his smile widening as he looked out toward the endless, brilliant horizon stretching across the city they had both conquered together.

"Let's keep it running," he replied.
