Chapter 13 - The Digital Siege

The executive penthouse of Vance Global Logistics towered over downtown Chicago, a glittering monument of glass, steel, and ruthless corporate ambition. From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sixty-fifth floor, Marcus Vance stood sipping a cup of artisanal espresso, watching the morning fog roll sluggishly over Lake Michigan. He felt invincible. For months, his master plan had been rolling forward like an unstoppable freight train. Dominic Moretti, the untouchable titan of the North Shore, was supposed to be a broken man by now—shackled by his own failing body, trapped behind a locked walnut door while Mercer systematically dismantled his empire from within.
Vance checked his Rolex. It was 8:14 in the morning. By all accounts, Mercer should have finalized the asset transfer documents by midnight last night. Yet, strangely, his secure encrypted terminal had been flashing a persistent amber warning light for the last three hours—a stubborn data loop indicating that the remote surveillance feed from the Moretti estate had suddenly gone dark.
"Damn incompetent security," Vance muttered, setting his espresso cup down on the polished marble desk with an angry clatter. He strode across the expansive office, sat down in his ergonomic leather executive chair, and slammed his hand down on the biometric terminal to access his private offshore oversight network.
The screen flickered. Instead of the familiar green dashboard displaying the Zurich shell company accounts and the live surveillance feeds of the Moretti mansion, the monitor flashed a violent, blinding crimson.
A single line of text appeared in bold, stark white lettering across the center of the display:
*ACCESS DENIED. TRACE COMPLETE.*
Vance frowned, leaning closer to the screen. "What is this garbage?" he snarled, frantically typing his master administrator override code into the keyboard.
The terminal didn't accept the code. Instead, the fan inside the computer tower suddenly roared to life, whining at maximum RPM as the processor overheated. Across the entire floor, the smart-office automation systems began to malfunction with terrifying speed. The smart-glass windows instantly polarized from clear to pitch black, plunging the entire sixty-fifth floor into sudden, suffocating darkness. The automated climate control shut down, and every computer monitor, tablet, and digital display in the executive suite began flashing the exact same pulsing, fourteen-hertz strobe pattern that Mercer had used to torture Dominic Moretti for four years.
"What the hell is happening?!" Vance yelled, stumbling backward out of his chair as the strobing light tore viciously across his eyes, triggering an overwhelming wave of nausea and blinding disorientation.
He lunged toward the heavy mahogany office door, desperate to escape, but the smart-lock mechanism clicked shut with a definitive, mechanical thud. The door was deadbolted from the outside—or rather, controlled entirely by a remote override originating thirty miles away on the North Shore.
Back in the subterranean command center of the Moretti estate, Penny Hodge sat comfortably in front of a sprawling triple-monitor diagnostic rig, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. Beside her, Dominic stood watching the live security camera feeds from Vance’s penthouse, his arms crossed over his chest, a cold, satisfied smile playing across his lips.
"Primary firewall breached," Penny announced calmly, executing a final sequence of complex commands on her terminal. "I've locked Vance out of every bank account, subsidiary ledger, and communication array he owns. His entire corporate infrastructure is currently quarantined inside an endless loop of his own strobe-light code."
Dominic watched on the monitor as Vance stumbled blindly across his pitch-black office, clutching his head as the strobing lights flashed against the glass walls. It was poetic, brutal justice—a digital mirror reflecting the exact psychological nightmare Vance had engineered for him.
"Can he override it?" Dominic asked, his deep voice devoid of pity.
"Not with a thousand IT specialists," Penny replied, leaning back in her chair and wiping a smudge of dust off her cheek with the back of her uninjured hand. "I didn't just lock his system; I bricked his motherboard, wiped his cloud backups, and uploaded the entire encrypted financial audit directly to the federal cyber-crimes division and the Chicago Tribune."

As if on cue, the secure radio on Dominic's belt crackled to life. Agent Miller’s voice came through, practically vibrating with shock and excitement. "Mr. Moretti! We just received an anonymous data dump containing undeniable proof of Marcus Vance’s financial conspiracy, his wire transfers to Mercer, and direct logs of the estate sabotage! Federal marshals are already raiding the Vance Global headquarters as we speak!"
Dominic looked down at Penny, the last lingering shadow of the past four years finally evaporating from his mind entirely. The trap was sprung. The enemy was dismantled. And the North Shore estate belonged entirely to him—and the brilliant, fearless electrician who had refused to look away.
