Chapter 7 - The Architect of Shadows

By dawn, the grand estate had transformed from a isolated fortress into a bustling command post for federal investigators. Forensic accountants, digital forensics teams, and crime scene technicians swarmed the corridors, bagging shattered glass, extracting hard drives from the server room, and analyzing the charred remains of the automated courtyard floodlight. Dominic Moretti sat in his private study on the ground floor, a steaming cup of black coffee cooling untouched on the dark mahogany desk before him. For the first time in nearly five years, he had slept a full, uninterrupted six hours—not because of heavy sedatives or experimental narcotics, but because his nervous system was finally free from the malicious 14-hertz strobe torture Mercer had engineered. A sharp knock sounded at the heavy oak door, and a federal special agent stepped into the room, holding a thick, encrypted dossier. "Mr. Moretti," the agent began respectfully, "we’ve decrypted Mercer’s terminal backups. You were right about the offshore accounts in the Caymans. He wasn't just skimming profits from your subsidiaries; he was systematically engineering a hostile takeover by bleeding your primary liquid assets dry, planning to declare your medical incapacity by year's end and force a court-appointed guardianship." Dominic didn't blink. His expression remained cold, calculating, and intensely dangerous. "And his associates?" "We've rounded up three of his contracted IT technicians who installed the low-frequency relays and the modified motion sensors outside your bedroom window," the agent replied, laying several printed photographs of the wiring schematics on the desk. "They're cooperating fully in exchange for federal plea deals. Mercer's network is completely dismantled. He's facing multiple counts of federal racketeering, corporate espionage, and attempted murder. He'll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison." Dominic nodded slowly, dismissing the agent with a wave of his hand. Once the heavy oak door clicked shut, Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, his thoughts drifting away from the federal indictment and landing squarely on the bruised, determined electrician from the South Side who had broken down his door when everyone else had followed orders to look away. He reached into his desk drawer, pulled out his smartphone, and dialed a direct corporate number. "Get me the current subcontracting roster for Apex Electrical Services," Dominic ordered the moment the line connected. "I want a full profile on Penny Hodge on my desk within the hour."
