Chapter 6 - The Federal Infiltration

The wail of approaching sirens grew deafening as multiple squad cars and federal unmarked SUVs tore up the winding North Shore driveway, their emergency strobes washing the grand estate in violent hues of crimson and azure. Inside the wrecked hallway, the air smelled of ozone, burnt plastic, and old dust. Caleb Mercer writhed against the wall, clutching his crushed hand where Penny’s heavy work boot had thoroughly pulverized his escape attempt. His immaculate facade was completely shattered; the silver-haired security chief who had terrorized an empire through shadow and circuitry now looked like a trapped rat cornered in a collapsing drainpipe. Dominic Moretti stood above him, towering and immovable, his chest rising and falling with slow, powerful breaths. The physical fog of four years of simulated epilepsy was entirely gone, replaced by an icy, razor-sharp focus that had made him a legend across Chicago’s corporate landscape long before Mercer ever dreamed of betraying him. Heavy tactical boots thudded against the marble staircase as federal agents and local police poured into the foyer, assault rifles raised, shouting rapid commands. "Federal agents! Freeze! Drop your weapons!" an authoritative voice boomed up the stairwell. Dominic raised his hands slowly, stepping back to give the officers a clear line of sight to Mercer. "He's unarmed," Dominic called out, his voice steady and commanding, cutting effortlessly through the chaos. "And he's the man you're looking for. Corporate racketeering, wire fraud, and attempted assassination." Two federal agents in heavy tactical gear rushed past Dominic, immediately slamming plastic zip-ties onto Mercer’s wrists and hauling the sputtering, furious former security chief to his feet. Mercer cast one last, venomous glare toward Dominic, his lips curling into a silent snarl, before he was aggressively shoved down the corridor toward the waiting squad cars. As the commotion began to clear out of the immediate hallway, Dominic let out a long, heavy sigh, feeling the residual tension finally drain from his massive frame. He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes scanning the wreckage of his home until they landed on the quiet, unassuming figure standing near the broken bedroom door. Penny Hodge was still clutching her old steel wrench, her breathing slightly elevated, the blood from her palm now partially dried against her torn work shirt. Dominic walked over to her, his long stride eating up the distance in seconds, stopping just inches away. He looked down at her with an intensity that made the surrounding federal agents hesitate to approach. "You saved my life, Ms. Hodge," Dominic said, his deep voice rich with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in years. "And you dismantled a multi-million-dollar corporate conspiracy with a hardware store tool." Penny offered a tired, wry grin, wiping a smudge of soot from her forehead with her uninjured arm. "Well, Mr. Moretti, nobody pays me to stand around when a circuit is blowing up in someone's face."
