Chapter 16 - Sisterhood in the Fire

Back at the Miller house, the air was electric with tension. Julianna sat at the kitchen table, her eyes wide as Claire laid out the offshore banking trails and the copies of the wire transfers she had printed.
"He never gave us the money," Julianna whispered, horror dawning on her. "Richard wasn't running Apex Digital... Richard was working for Vance all along. They set me up."
"They set you up because you were arrogant, desperate for clout, and blind to the real world," Claire said plainly, not softening the blow. "They saw a pretty girl who wanted to play tech mogul, and an old father who would sign anything to keep his golden child smiling. You were the bait, Julianna. And Dad swallowed the hook."
Julianna looked down at her hands, tears dripping onto the table. But this time, something in her posture shifted. She didn't make an excuse. She didn't whine about how hard her life was. She looked up at Claire, her eyes hardening with a resolve Claire had never seen in her before.
"Richard kept a backup drive," Julianna said quietly.
Claire paused. "What?"
"When Richard cleared out his apartment and ran, he left behind a box of tech gear in my storage locker. I thought it was just old monitors and cables. But there was an encrypted hard drive. He told me never to touch it. He said it had Apex’s source code on it."
Claire grabbed Julianna’s arm. "Where is that drive?"
"In my unit downtown. But Claire... it’s locked with a twenty-four-character alphanumeric key. We don't have the password."
Julianna pulled out her phone, her fingers flying over the screen. "Richard had a habit. He was a narcissist. He always used the coordinates of his favorite sailing harbor in the Virgin Islands combined with his mother’s maiden name. Let me call his estranged sister. She hates his guts as much as we do."
For the next four hours, the two sisters worked not as rivals, but as a unit. Julianna used her social engineering skills to coax the maiden name and the old sailing vessel registration from Richard’s furious family members, while Claire set up a clean workstation to bypass the drive's secondary verification protocols.
At 11:30 PM, the drive unlocked with a soft mechanical chime.
Dozens of folders spilled across the monitor. Email archives, recorded phone calls, and contract templates. Among them was an audio recording labeled: *Vance_Settlement_Plan.mp3*.
Julianna pressed play.
Marcus Vance’s unmistakable voice echoed through the kitchen speakers: *"Make sure the old man signs the personal guarantee before Friday, Richard. Once that lien is attached to the suburban parcel, we default the shell company within six months. The land alone is zoned for multi-family redevelopment. We’ll flip the whole acre to a condo developer for eight hundred grand and split the margin. Just make sure the daughter doesn't look at the wire origin."*
May you like
Julianna gasped, clapping her hands over her mouth.
Claire didn't gasp. A slow, chilling smile touched her lips. "We don't need fourteen days, Julianna. We just need tomorrow morning."
