Chapter 27 - The Montgomery Secret

During the court's thirty-minute recess, the atmosphere in the private conference room outside the courtroom crackled with electricity.
Evelyn was seated at the table, rapidly typing on her laptop, a secure satellite feed connected to an old colleague at the Swiss Federal Banking Commission.
"Paul took a massive chunk out of their credibility," Claire said, pacing the room, the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "But Cole’s primary argument remains: he’s the biological father, he has unlimited resources, and he’s claiming parental rights. Judge Davies is fair, but family law heavily favors biological fathers if they have the means to provide."
"Unless," Evelyn said, looking up from her screen, a cold smile touching her lips, "the biological father is legally barred from exercising parental authority under federal corporate securities law."
Claire stopped pacing. Paul Martinez leaned in, his eyes wide. "What did you find, Evelyn?"
"Arthur Montgomery—Cole's late father—didn't just write a trust fund stipulation requiring an heir," Evelyn explained, turning the laptop screen toward them. "He knew what his son was. He knew Cole was a sociopathic narcissist who burned through people and money. Seven years ago, Cole was involved in a catastrophic boating accident off the coast of Monaco that left two deckhands severely injured. Arthur spent forty million dollars burying the criminal charges, but he forced Cole to sign a sealed, irrevocable corporate conservatorship agreement."
Paul rapidly read through the Swiss legal translation on the screen, his breath catching in his throat. "My God. To protect the Montgomery family holding company from future liability, Cole legally surrendered his status as an independent legal guardian for any future dependents without the unanimous written consent of the Montgomery Global Board of Directors!"
"And Cole hasn't told his board he's here," Claire realized instantly, the pieces falling into place with crystal clarity. "He’s trying to secure Lily first, force the inheritance to unlock, and present the board with a fait accompli before they can block him!"
"Worse," Evelyn added, clicking another tab. "The board of Montgomery Global is headed by Cole's bitterest rival—his aunt, Victoria Montgomery. Victoria has been waiting five years for Cole to turn forty without an heir so the trust assets default to her charitable foundation. If Victoria finds out Cole is trying to use Lily as a pawn, she won't just refuse consent; she will strip Cole of his CEO title by sunset."
Claire looked at Evelyn, a surge of awe and gratitude filling her chest. "How do we get this into Davies' hands without Cole's high-priced lawyers tying it up in evidentiary objections for six months?"
"We don't give it to Davies," Paul said, a fierce grin breaking across his exhausted face. "We give it to the woman waiting outside in the limousine."
Paul pointed out the second-story window of the conference room. Parked across the street from the courthouse, behind Cole’s Maybach, was a gleaming silver Rolls-Royce Phantom with New York plates.

Stepping out of the vehicle was an elegant, silver-haired woman in an emerald silk dress and a sable coat, surrounded by four corporate aides.
"Victoria Montgomery," Evelyn whispered. "I sent her an encrypted email at six this morning with the courthouse docket number. It seems Aunt Victoria caught the first private jet out of Teterboro."
