Chapter 28 - The Courtroom Ambush

When Judge Davies reconvened the court, the tension in the room was suffocating.

Cole Montgomery sat with his arms crossed, his face an arrogant mask once more. Gregory Sterling stood ready to deliver his closing argument, confident that Cole’s immense wealth and genetic claim would outweigh the embarrassing distraction of Richard Miller's arrest.

"Your Honor," Sterling began, "while the defense has raised minor procedural irregularities, the incontrovertible biological fact remains: Mr. Montgomery is the father. Lily Montgomery carries his blood—"

"Her name is Lily *Miller*," Claire said firmly from her seat, ignoring Paul's gentle attempt to hush her.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a dramatic creak.

Every head turned. Walking down the center aisle with the commanding presence of an empress was Victoria Montgomery, her silver hair coiled into an immaculate chignon, her emerald jewelry catching the overhead lights. Behind her walked two senior partners from Sullivan & Cromwell, carrying thick leather document cases.

Cole shot out of his chair as if he had been struck by lightning. "Victoria?! What the hell are you doing here?"

"Sit down, Cole," Victoria said, her voice clear, cultured, and dripping with arctic disdain. "You are embarrassing what little remains of our family name."

Judge Davies slammed her gavel down. "Counsel, who is this woman, and why is she disrupting my court?"

Victoria stepped directly to the bar, offering a polite, aristocratic nod toward the bench. "Forgive the intrusion, Your Honor. I am Victoria Montgomery, Chairwoman of the Board of Montgomery Global Ventures and executor of the Arthur Montgomery Estate. I have flown here from Manhattan to submit an amicus brief and a formal board resolution regarding Mr. Cole Montgomery’s petition."

Cole lunged toward the aisle, his face contorting into an ugly mask of rage. "She has no standing here! Sterling, stop her! This is a private family matter!"

"It ceased to be a private family matter the moment you attempted to use an innocent child to commit fraud against the Montgomery Dynasty Trust," Victoria countered smoothly, never once raising her voice.

Her attorney handed a sealed document with the gold seal of the New York State Supreme Court directly to the bailiff, who passed it up to Judge Davies.

"Your Honor," Victoria continued, looking directly at Judge Davies. "Under Section 14 of the Arthur Montgomery Trust Agreement, Cole Montgomery was disqualified from legal guardianship of any minor beneficiaries without the unanimous consent of our board. An emergency board meeting was convened at seven o'clock this morning. By a vote of eleven to one, the board has formally and permanently denied consent for Mr. Cole Montgomery to petition for custody, guardianship, or visitation of Lily Miller."

Cole let out a guttural sound of pure fury, slamming both fists onto his mahogany table. "You old viper! It’s my company! I built Montgomery Global!"

"You ran it into the ground, Cole," Victoria replied icily. "And as of forty-five minutes ago, the board voted to suspend your executive powers pending a forensic audit of the corporate funds you illegally funneled to Mr. Richard Miller last night."

Cole’s knees gave out slightly; he gripped the edge of the table to keep from collapsing, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The invincible billionaire, the man who had terrified Claire on her porch thirty-six hours ago, had been stripped of his money, his power, and his leverage in the span of three minutes.

Judge Davies finished reading the document. She set it down, took off her glasses, and looked at Cole with pure, unadulterated contempt.

"Mr. Montgomery," Judge Davies said, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. "Your petition for emergency custody is dismissed with prejudice. Your parental rights claim is permanently stayed under the binding terms of your own family’s legal conservatorship. Furthermore, I am issuing a five-year permanent protective order prohibiting you, your agents, or your employees from coming within one thousand yards of Claire Miller, Lily Miller, their home, or St. Jude’s Academy."

The judge struck the gavel with finality.

"Court is adjourned."
