Chapter 20 - The Midnight Visitor

Night fell gently over the quiet suburban neighborhood. By eleven o'clock, the dishes were washed, the lights were dimmed, and the house was wrapped in deep, peaceful slumber. Arthur was asleep in the downstairs master bedroom, Julianna was resting in the guest suite, and Lily was curled up in her bed with Barnaby snoozing at the foot of her mattress.

Claire sat alone in the living room, illuminated only by the soft glow of a small desk lamp. She was finishing her monthly financial reconciliation, double-checking the utility payments and filing away the clean title certificates. Everything was in order. Every single dollar accounted for. Every threat neutralized.

Suddenly, Barnaby let out a low, rumbling growl from Lily’s bedroom down the hall.

Claire froze, her pen suspended above the paper.

Outside on the street, the deep, heavy thrum of an engine vibrated through the floorboards. It wasn't the sound of an ordinary car. It was the low, menacing growl of an exotic sports car idling right in front of their driveway.

Claire stood up slowly, her pulse spiking. She moved to the window, gently parting the sheer lace curtains.

Parked under the amber glow of the streetlamp was a sleek, matte-black Maybach with foreign consular plates. The engine cut off, plunging the street into an eerie, heavy silence.

The driver’s door opened, and a chauffeur in a dark suit stepped out, briskly walking to the rear passenger door and pulling it wide.

A tall, imposing man in his late thirties stepped out onto the asphalt. He wore an immaculate tailored Italian trench coat. He took off his dark sunglasses, looking up at the Miller house with an arrogant, familiar smirk.

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, the blood draining from her face in an instant.

It wasn't Marcus Vance. It wasn't Richard.

It was Cole Montgomery.

The billionaire tech heir who had vanished eleven years ago when Claire told him she was pregnant. The man whose family had threatened to destroy Claire if she ever spoke his name. The man with the piercing green eyes that matched Lily’s exactly.

Cole adjusted his cuffs, pulled a certified legal manila folder from his coat pocket, and began walking up the front path toward the porch steps.

Then, Claire’s cell phone on the desk lit up. An unknown private number flashed on the screen.

May you like

Her hands shaking violently, Claire answered the call and brought it to her ear.

"Hello, Claire," Cole’s smooth, terrifyingly confident voice came through the receiver, just as his heavy leather shoes took the first step onto the front porch. "I hear you’ve been doing a wonderful job raising my daughter. But now, it’s time she came home to her real family."
