Chapter 24 - Shadows over St. Jude’s

The intimidation didn't stop with media headlines. By noon, Cole Montgomery’s reach crept directly into the places Claire considered holy ground.
Claire was at Paul’s office reviewing counter-affidavits when her cell phone rang frantically. It was Sister Mary Catherine, the headmistress of St. Jude’s Academy.
"Claire, you need to come to the school immediately," the nun whispered, her usually serene voice laced with panic. "There are four private security guards in our front lobby. They claim to represent Mr. Cole Montgomery, and they have served the board of education with an emergency injunction demanding Lily’s immediate withdrawal and transfer to a private flight out of the county airport."
Claire didn't even hang up. She grabbed her keys, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Paul! St. Jude’s! Now!"
They arrived at the brick academy ten minutes later, their tires skidding against the slush in the parking lot. Two sleek black Suburbans were blocking the main entrance. In the school’s front reception area, parents picking up kindergarteners were whispering in shock as two towering private security guards in tactical suits stood watch beside an immaculate young associate attorney holding a leather portfolio.
Sister Mary Catherine stood before the hallway leading to the classrooms, her small frame held erect with rigid, righteous authority, blocking the path.
"I don't care how many corporate seals are on that parchment, young man," Sister Mary Catherine was saying coldly to the associate. "Lily Miller is a registered student under the sole guardianship of Claire Miller. Until a judge of this county orders otherwise, you will not take one step past this desk."
"Ma'am, we have temporary emergency protective orders executed by an out-of-state judge," the young lawyer sneered, adjusting his gold tie. "If you obstruct—"
"He won't obstruct, but I will," Claire’s voice rang through the vaulted marble foyer like a whip crack.
The associate turned, an arrogant smirk forming on his face. "Ah, Ms. Miller. We were hoping to avoid a scene. Mr. Montgomery has arranged private charter transport to his medical facility in Boston for comprehensive health screenings—"
"Touch my daughter, and you will leave this building in handcuffs," Claire said, walking directly up to the man, refusing to flinch. Paul Martinez stepped up beside her, holding his legal badge and a signed emergency stay of execution.
"I am Paul Martinez, counsel of record for Claire Miller," Paul barked, his voice echoing off the high ceilings, drawing the eyes of every parent and teacher in the room. "The out-of-state order you are attempting to enforce has not been domesticated under the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act. You are attempting an extrajudicial kidnapping on school property. I have the county district attorney on line two, and Sheriff Callahan is already three minutes out with four patrol cruisers."
The associate's smug expression instantly vanished. He glanced at the two burly guards, who shifted uncomfortably, their hands dropping away from their tactical belts.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Martinez," the associate muttered, clutching his portfolio. "Mr. Montgomery’s resources are limitless. Tomorrow morning, your client will lose everything."
"Then we'll see you in court tomorrow morning," Claire said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Now take your hired thugs and get out of my daughter's school before I have the sheriff arrest you for criminal trespass."
The associate glared at her, hissed a command to his security team, and stormed out through the double glass doors, their boots squeaking against the wet linoleum.
From the shadow of the administration hallway, Lily slowly walked out, holding her backpack tightly against her chest. Her face was pale, but when she saw Claire, she didn't cry. She stood tall, walked straight past the staring parents, and slipped her hand firmly into her mother's.

"I told them they couldn't take me," Lily said quietly, her green eyes blazing with the same unyielding fire that had sustained Claire through eleven years of hardship. "I told them my mother was Claire Miller, and nobody pushes her around."
Tears pricked Claire's eyes, but she swallowed them down, squeezing Lily's hand with fierce, unbreakable devotion. "That's right, my brave girl. Nobody ever will."
