Chapter 25 - Shadows of Manhattan

The private jet banked smoothly over the Hudson River, its wings slicing through the crisp twilight air as the glittering skyline of Manhattan rose up to meet us like a jagged ridge of diamonds.

Through the triple-paned glass of the cabin window, I watched the sprawling city lights twinkle below. For anyone else, a flight into New York meant business meetings, high-stakes negotiations, or exhausting media circuits. For me, it was simply the next logical step in an unstoppable global expansion.

As the Gulfstream G650 touched down smoothly on the private tarmac at Teterboro Airport, a sleek motorcade of three black Maybachs was already waiting at the base of the private hangar.

The cabin door opened, and a rush of cool, autumn air swept inside. I stood up, smoothing the front of my cream-colored cashmere trench coat over a tailored charcoal dress, adjusting the diamond-and-sapphire ring on my finger.

My chief security detail, led by a seasoned ex-MI6 operative named Marcus Croft, was waiting at the bottom of the airstair.

"Welcome to New York, Ms. Vance," Marcus said, snapping a crisp, respectful nod as I stepped onto the tarmac. "Everything is set at the Pierre Hotel. The penthouse suite has been swept and secured, and your dinner with the European trade delegates is confirmed for 8:00 PM."

"Thank you, Marcus," I replied evenly, stepping into the back of the lead vehicle. "Any intelligence updates regarding the Pacific-Rim acquisition?"

Marcus slid into the passenger seat as the door closed, pulling a secure encrypted tablet from his briefcase. "A few whispers, ma’am. Our competitors are watching this merger very closely. There are rumors that some legacy shipping syndicates in Europe are unhappy about Chesapeake dominating the transatlantic logistics routes."

I let out a quiet, knowing smile. "Let them be unhappy. Power doesn't ask for permission; it dictates the terms."

The motorcade glided out of the private airfield, merging seamlessly into the roaring stream of interstate traffic heading toward the Lincoln Tunnel. Manhattan stretched out before us, a towering labyrinth of ambition, wealth, and relentless competition.

Two hours later, after a flawless check-in at the Pierre, I stood on the private wrap-around balcony of the penthouse suite, looking down at the endless sea of red and white taillights rushing along Fifth Avenue.

The wind whipped my hair slightly across my face, but I didn't flinch. I took a slow sip of sparkling mineral water, letting the cool night air fill my lungs.

My phone buzzed on the glass cocktail table inside the suite.

I walked back inside, picking up the device. It was an encrypted message from Sarah back at headquarters in Chicago:

*“Boss, interesting development. An unknown entity just purchased a twelve percent equity stake in our primary European shipping partner through a series of anonymous Lichtenstein trusts. The transaction cleared just ten minutes ago.”*

My eyes narrowed as I stared at the screen. A twelve percent stake in our primary European partner was not a passive investment—it was a strategic foothold designed to disrupt our supply chain from across the Atlantic.

"Lichtenstein trusts," I murmured to myself, tapping my fingernail thoughtfully against the glass screen. "Somebody with very deep pockets and a very long memory is trying to build a new bridge."

Before I could reply to Sarah, a sharp, urgent knock echoed from the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite.

I turned my head toward the entryway. Marcus Croft appeared from the adjoining security room instantly, his hand resting instinctively near his holster, his eyes locked on the heavy oak door.

"Stay back," Marcus muttered into his comms unit, stepping cautiously toward the entryway.

He looked through the high-definition peephole, his brow furrowing deeply. He didn't open the door immediately. Instead, he turned back to look at me, his expression uncharacteristically tense.

May you like

"Ms. Vance," Marcus said cautiously. "You’re going to want to see this."
