Chapter 28 - The Midnight Meeting

The penthouse suite fell into a heavy, contemplative silence once Helena was gone.
I walked back out onto the wrap-around balcony, resting my hands on the glass railing as the cool New York night breeze brushed against my face. Far below, the endless river of traffic hummed like a restless machine.
My victory over Helena Sterling was complete, but her parting words echoed quietly in the back of my mind.
*“There are others. People you don't even know exist.”*
In the world of high finance and corporate dominance, enemies were never truly eliminated; they simply evolved. When you tear down one dynasty, another shadow invariably rises to fill the vacuum.
My phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn't Sarah, and it wasn't an automated market alert.
It was a restricted, encrypted satellite call.
I pulled the phone from my pocket and pressed accept, holding the device to my ear.
"Speak," I commanded, my voice steady.
A deep, gravelly voice echoed through the encrypted line—a voice I recognized instantly as Director Vance—no relation to my ex-husband, but a high-ranking intelligence liaison who occasionally collaborated with our corporate security division on international security threats.
"Claire," the Director said without preamble. "I hope I'm not interrupting your victory tour in Manhattan."
"Get to the point, Director," I replied, leaning against the balcony railing. "What did your satellites find?"
"Sterling was just the tip of the iceberg," the Director said grimly. "Our intelligence feeds in Geneva and Zurich just flagged a massive consolidation of shadow capital. Someone is quietly buying up distressed debt across our logistics sector—hundreds of millions of dollars funneled through an umbrella corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name *Apex Syndicate*."
My eyes narrowed. "Apex Syndicate. I've never heard of them."
"Nobody has," the Director replied. "They operate entirely in the dark. But according to our behavioral analysts, whoever is pulling the strings at Apex isn't interested in a hostile takeover or a corporate merger. They're positioning themselves for a full-scale asset seizure."
"When?" I asked, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp register.
"Sooner than you think," the Director warned. "They’ve scheduled a closed-door emergency meeting with the board of directors of your Pacific-Rim shipping partner for tomorrow morning at dawn—before you even step foot in your keynote address."
A cold, electric thrill surged through my veins. They thought they could blindside me while I was distracted by the Manhattan gala. They thought they could carve up my supply lines behind closed doors while I was preparing my speech.
"Where is the meeting taking place?" I asked smoothly.
"A private penthouse suite at the Plaza Hotel," the Director answered. "Secured by private mercenaries. You won't even be able to get past the lobby security."
I let out a quiet, confident laugh.
"Director," I said softly, "you seem to forget something fundamental about how I operate."
"What's that?"
May you like
"I don't wait for my enemies to ambush me," I said, a dangerous, beautiful smile touching my lips. "I bring the battlefield to their front door."
