Chapter 19 - The Dawn of Absolute Peace

By Wednesday evening, the fallout hit the local news circuits—not as a major scandal, but as a brief, glowing exposé on corporate identity theft protection featuring an anonymous tech executive who successfully outmaneuvered a predatory family financial scheme. My name wasn't mentioned, but my company’s security framework was praised as a gold standard for digital self-defense.

I sat in my apartment once again, the sliding glass balcony doors open wide to let in the cool, salt-scented night air of the California coast.

The city lights twinkled in the distance like a million tiny stars, mirroring the quiet brilliance of my new reality. My phone sat on the kitchen island—completely, wonderfully silent. No emergency alerts. No angry voicemails. No manipulative texts from numbers I used to dread seeing pop up on my screen.

They were out of my life. Permanently.

The legal proceedings would undoubtedly drag on for months, resulting in plea deals, probation, and restitution orders that would keep Mason, Alyssa, and my mother tied up in civil court until they learned what it meant to earn an honest living. But I wouldn't be there to watch it. I had handed the reins over to Sarah’s firm with instructions to handle everything quietly in the background. My only job now was to live.

I walked over to the kitchen island, picked up my steaming mug of tea, and stepped out onto the balcony. The ocean roared softly in the darkness, a rhythmic, eternal heartbeat that grounded me in the present moment.

I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with air that tasted clean, sweet, and entirely my own.

For the first time in thirty years, I didn't owe anyone anything. I didn't have to apologize for my success, hide my achievements to spare someone else's fragile ego, or pay for mistakes I never made.

Inside, my laptop chimed softly, signalling an incoming message from the board of directors. I walked back inside, setting my mug down, and opened the screen.
