Chapter 30 - The Unfinished Horizon

I stared at the glowing monitor, the photograph of myself looking back through the penthouse glass burning into my retinas. The federal holding facility, maximum security, supposedly impenetrable—yet Victor Sterling had managed to reach out from behind bars, snapping a clear, targeted photo of my private sanctuary.
It wasn't just a threat anymore. It was a declaration of personal war.
For a lesser man, panic would have set in. But as I sat there in the quiet glow of the screens, a cold, absolute calm settled over me. Sterling thought he was the master chess player, hiding in the shadows of the penal system, pulling strings through smuggled devices and corrupted guards. He didn't realize that by sending that photo, he had just handed me his exact digital and physical coordinates.
My fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. I bypassed all standard corporate protocol, routing my terminal directly into the federal corrections database using my top-level clearance as Global Chief Security Architect for the Geneva parent firm.
Within ninety seconds, I had bypassed the internal firewall of the federal holding facility, accessed the live security camera feeds of the cell block, and located the exact terminal device used to transmit the encrypted image.
On the split-screen monitor, I watched the live CCTV feed of Cell Block 4B. There, sitting at a contraband-modded contraband tablet in a corner cell, was Victor Sterling himself, a smug, arrogant smirk plastered across his face as he typed what was undoubtedly meant to be his next taunting message.
He thought he was untouchable behind concrete walls and federal jurisdiction.
I didn't panic. I didn't call the authorities to file a routine complaint. I simply opened the master control interface for the facility's internal electronic grid—a smart-infrastructure system our firm had incidentally helped integrate two years prior.
With a single, deliberate keystroke, I initiated a remote lockdown sequence on Cell Block 4B.
On the live monitor, I watched as the heavy steel doors slammed shut with an authoritative thud, locking down every single exit. Simultaneously, I triggered a high-frequency digital surge that fried the contraband tablet in Sterling’s hands, sending a harmless yet terrifying electric spark across the plastic casing that made him jump back in absolute horror.
The smug smirk vanished from his face, replaced by sudden, raw terror as he looked directly into the security camera lens, realizing instantly who had just reached through the digital ether to grab him by the throat.
I leaned in close to my microphone, activating the local intercom speaker inside his cell block. My voice echoed coldly, chillingly through the concrete room miles away.
"Checkmate, Victor," I whispered softly into the mic.
Before he could even open his mouth to scream, the heavy footsteps of armed federal guards—automatically dispatched by my prioritized override protocol—echoed down the hallway, rushing directly toward his cell.
May you like
I closed the live feed, leaned back in my leather chair, and took a slow, deep breath of absolute peace. The city outside was quiet, the horizon stretching endlessly into the dawn of a new day. My empire was secure, my past was buried, and the game was entirely on my terms.
At least, for now...
