Chapter 25 - The Roots of the Syndicate

I zoomed in on the bank statement attached to my mother’s frantic letter. It detailed a series of wire transfers and cash advances that Mason had taken out over the past six months, attempting to cover up the initial $17,000 deficit I had exposed during the disastrous engagement party. But instead of going to legitimate financial institutions, the transactions pointed to a shell corporation registered offshore—a shadowy entity operating under the name *Vanguard Holdings LLC.*

My breath hitched. Vanguard Holdings wasn't just a local loan shark operation. It was a known front for a syndicate specializing in predatory debt acquisition and high-leverage corporate extortion, operating heavily across the Eastern Seaboard and branching into international financial markets.

How did Mason get mixed up with a syndicate like that?

I opened a secure terminal window, bypassing standard domain lookups to query the corporate registry of Vanguard Holdings. Lines of code scrolled down my screen as my custom script scraped public filings, tax records, and hidden beneficial ownership registries. The corporate veil was thick, layered behind dummy LLCs in Delaware and offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. But given enough processing power and the right decryption keys, every digital shadow eventually cast a light.

Ten minutes later, the backend database cracked open. I stared at the true ultimate beneficial owner listed on the restricted corporate registry.

It wasn't a stranger. It was a name I recognized instantly from my corporate past—Victor Sterling.

Victor Sterling was a high-level executive who had been quietly ousted from our parent company in Geneva three years ago following an internal corruption probe I had inadvertently helped uncover. He had lost his position, his reputation, and his multi-million-dollar severance package. And ever since, he had been operating in the criminal underworld, using predatory shell companies to target corporations and individuals tied to his former colleagues.

He hadn't targeted my family by accident. He had targeted them because they shared my last name. Mason and my mother were just collateral damage in a much larger, highly targeted campaign of personal revenge against me.

My phone rang, breaking my intense concentration. This time, it was a direct, unsecured call from a domestic number. I glanced at the caller ID. It was a local cell phone number, registered to Mason.

I stared at the glowing screen for a moment before swiping to answer. I didn't say a word.

"Ethan?" Mason’s voice sounded cracked, exhausted, and utterly broken. There was no arrogance left, no condescending smirk, no mocking tone. Just absolute terror. "Ethan, please... please tell me you're there."

"I'm here, Mason," I said, my voice dangerously calm, devoid of any warmth.

"Ethan, they're here. They're at the apartment. Two men in suits. They said... they said if I don't sign over the deed to Mom's house and clear their ledger by midnight, they're going to break my legs and make sure I never work again. Mom is having a panic attack in the bedroom. Please... you have the money now. You have that big international job. You can pay them off. Please save us."

I listened to the desperate whimpering on the other end of the line, feeling a strange mixture of pity and absolute detachment. They had dug their own graves, shovel by shovel, ignoring every warning I had given them.

"Mason," I said softly, the silence stretching between us. "You didn't just borrow money. You invited a professional predator into our family's home because you wanted a lavish engagement party you couldn't afford."

"I was stupid! I know I was stupid!" Mason sobbed openly now. "Just help us, Ethan! Please!"

"Listen to me very carefully, Mason," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "Put the phone on speaker and lay it on the coffee table. Let your new friends listen to every word I have to say."
