Chapter 9 - The Masterpiece of Peace

By December, the air had turned crisp, and the holiday season was in full swing.

Back home, winter storms were freezing the Midwest, but here in California, the weather was mild, sunny, and bright. My life had settled into an exquisite, harmonious rhythm of deep work, morning surf sessions, quiet evenings reading on the balcony, and building genuine friendships with people who valued integrity and mutual respect.

Mason flew out to spend Christmas week with me. We didn't do a massive, elaborate holiday feast; instead, we grilled steaks on the balcony in t-shirts while listening to classic rock and watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the Pacific in brilliant shades of pink and gold.

As we sat at the outdoor table with two glasses of vintage bourbon, Mason raised his glass toward mine.

“To one hell of a year,” Mason said, grinning broadly. “From a nightmare living room in Ohio to a penthouse-level balcony in California. Remind me never to mess with a software engineer who keeps a contingency folder.”

I clinked my glass against his, the crystal ringing out clear and bright in the evening air. “To contingency folders,” I toasted back. “And to knowing when to walk away.”

“So,” Mason said, leaning back in his chair with a knowing smirk. “Are you ever going back? To visit family, I mean?”

I took a slow sip of the bourbon, feeling its warmth spread through my chest. “No, Mason. There’s nothing left for me there. My past is a country I don't live in anymore.”

“And romance?” Mason asked, raising an eyebrow. “Any chance the tech wizard is ready to let someone new into the fortress?”

I looked out across the ocean, where the distant lights of fishing boats bobbed gently on the dark water. For the first time in years, the thought didn't bring any anxiety, hesitation, or fear of betrayal. It felt light, open, and full of possibility.

“Yeah,” I smiled, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of peace settle into my bones. “I think I am.”
