Chapter 17 - The Whistleblower’s Testimony

When court reconvened at 1:30 PM, the atmosphere in the chamber was suffocating. Every seat in the gallery was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious spectators eager to witness the downfall of Charleston’s most untouchable corporate dynasty.
Judge Sterling banged his gavel, restoring absolute silence. "Be seated. Mr. Vance, I understand you have a witness you wish to call to the stand before we proceed with the asset freeze arguments."
"Yes, Your Honor," Harrison said, stepping forward with quiet confidence. "The defense calls Mr. Thomas Sterling—no relation to the bench—formerly chief financial officer of Vance Global Logistics."
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery as a middle-aged man with thinning gray hair, dark circles under his eyes, and a thick leather briefcase stepped out from the back of the courtroom and made his way toward the witness stand. Thomas Sterling had been Grant’s loyal, silent number-two for over a decade—until Grant’s toxic management style and illegal financial directives had pushed him past his breaking point three weeks ago.
After taking the oath, Thomas sat down, his hands resting steadily on the wooden partition.
"Mr. Sterling," Harrison began, stepping up to the podium with a calm, methodical demeanor. "In your capacity as CFO of Vance Global Logistics, did you ever receive direct instructions from Mr. Grant Vance to alter financial disclosures or conceal corporate assets from federal regulatory bodies?"
Arthur Pendelton leaped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! Leading the witness, and calling for speculation regarding internal corporate policies."
"Overruled, Mr. Pendelton," Judge Sterling snapped without hesitation. "The witness is under oath, and he was the chief financial officer of the entity in question. Answer the question, Mr. Sterling."
Thomas took a deep breath, looking across the courtroom directly at Grant, who was gripping the edge of the defense table so hard his knuckles were stark white.
"Yes," Thomas said clearly, his voice echoing through the silent chamber. "On multiple occasions over the past four years, Mr. Vance instructed me to route municipal supply revenues through unregistered shell companies registered in the Caymans. Furthermore, during the merger acquisition of Lowcountry Outdoor Supply in 2018, Mr. Vance personally altered the escrow ledger to strip the original founding family of their controlling equity stake without their knowledge or consent."
A loud gasp echoed from the gallery. Victoria Vance closed her eyes, her aristocratic facade finally cracking under the weight of undeniable public exposure.
Harrison didn't miss a beat. He walked over to his table, picked up a thick, color-coded binder, and handed it to the bailiff. "Your Honor, we enter Exhibit H-47 into the record—a complete digital trail of the altered escrow ledgers, bearing Mr. Grant Vance’s digital signature and authenticated by federal forensic auditors."
Judge Sterling opened the binder, flipping through the pages with slow, deliberate care. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the overhead air conditioning vents.

After what felt like an eternity, Judge Sterling looked up, his gaze locking directly onto Grant Vance with the force of a falling anvil.
"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "Do you have anything to say before I issue an immediate bench warrant for your arrest, freeze all corporate assets of Vance Global Logistics, and hand this entire file over to the U.S. Attorney’s office for federal indictment?"
