Chapter 26 - Whispers of a New Empire

By late afternoon, the news had already broken across financial news networks nationwide: *VANCE INDUSTRIES COLLAPSES UNDER FEDERAL PROBE; FORMER HOUSEWIFE ASSUMES CONTROLLING OWNERSHIP.*
The media frenzy outside the Charleston Financial Tower was absolute chaos. Microphones were thrust into the air, camera flashes blinded me as I stepped out onto the granite steps, and reporters shouted questions over one another, desperate to capture a soundbite from the woman who had orchestrated the most stunning corporate overthrow in South Carolina history.
I didn't rush. I walked down the steps with absolute poise, my hand resting gently on Lily’s shoulder as she walked beside me, wearing a bright yellow dress and looking up at me with eyes full of awe and complete safety. Marcus had already slipped away out the side exit, true to his word, leaving behind a legacy entirely cleansed of its toxic past.
When we finally reached our town car and climbed into the plush leather interior, letting the heavy doors shut out the roaring crowd, I let out a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline that had sustained me through the boardroom ambush slowly began to recede, replaced by a profound, radiant wave of peace.
"Are we rich now, Mommy?" Lily asked innocently, tilting her head as she played with the strap of her small purse.
I smiled, pulling her close and kissing the top of her head. "We were always rich in the things that mattered, sweet heart," I said softly, my voice thick with emotion. "Money just gives us the power to make sure no one ever makes you feel small again."

My encrypted phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting another media inquiry or a message from my legal team. Instead, it was an alert from the Charleston County Jail: an automated notification that Grant’s formal arraignment had been concluded, resulting in a denial of bail due to extreme flight risk. He was officially locked away, awaiting trial with no hope of rescue, stripped of every illusion of power that had fueled his arrogance.
I swiped the notification away without a second thought, silencing the phone and dropping it back into my bag. The ghosts of the past were officially laid to rest.
