Chapter 23 - The Crimson Ledger

I stared at the heavy, cream-colored envelope in Marcus’s hand, the Charleston sea breeze catching the edge of my coat. The temptation to reach out and snatch it was immense—it represented absolute security, the ultimate vindication for every tear Lily had shed, and the definitive destruction of the system that had oppressed us. But old trauma doesn't vanish overnight; it whispers warnings in the dark.
"What's the catch, Marcus?" I asked, keeping my hands firmly at my sides, shielding Lily slightly behind my hip. "Nothing in your family comes free. You didn't fly across the Atlantic out of the goodness of your heart. What do you get out of handing me the keys to the kingdom?"
Marcus let out a low, rueful chuckle, lowering his hand slightly. "A fair question, and frankly, if you hadn't asked it, I would have questioned your sanity. The truth is simple, Clara: I want the Vance name cleansed of the absolute filth my brother and our grandfather smeared it with. For decades, the name has been synonymous with corruption, misogyny, and cruelty. If Grant retains any foothold, the legacy is permanently damned. By handing control over to you—a woman who survived their abuse and emerged stronger—the narrative changes. You dismantle the patriarchy from the inside out using their own stolen capital. As for my stake? I want out permanently. Once you take the reins, I am transferring my remaining silent shares into a charitable trust for single mothers and displaced children, and I'm catching the next flight back to London, never to return."
I studied his eyes for a long, agonizing minute. There was no flicker of deceit there—only a profound, weary exhaustion, the look of a man who had spent his entire life carrying the heavy, rotting baggage of a toxic dynasty and was finally desperate to put it down.
Slowly, I reached out and took the envelope from his hand. The paper was cool and heavy against my fingertips.

"If this is a trap, Marcus," I said softly, my voice carrying a quiet menace that made even him blink, "I won't just sue you. I will dismantle every single thing you love, piece by piece, with my bare hands."
Marcus offered a faint, approving nod. "If it's a trap, Clara, you have my full permission to destroy me. Now open it. Your corporate counter-offensive begins today."
