Chapter 22 - The Exiled Heir's Proposition

The quiet hum of the black town car’s engine was the only sound filling the brief, tense silence that followed Marcus Vance’s astonishing declaration. Passersby strolled past us along the Charleston waterfront, entirely oblivious to the seismic shift happening in the space of three square feet. I looked at Marcus, searching his sharp, weathered features for any sign of a trap, a hidden camera, or a cruel psychological game engineered by the remnants of a family that viewed human beings as disposable chess pieces.

"An alliance?" I repeated, letting out a dry, skeptical laugh that held no amusement. "Marcus, excuse me if I find it a bit difficult to trust anyone wearing that last name. For years, the Vances operated like a cartel, treating my daughter and me like second-class fixtures designed to serve your egos. Why on earth would I align myself with another member of a dynasty built on our subjugation?"

Marcus nodded slowly, acknowledging the validity of my rage with a dip of his chin. He didn't flinch or look away. "You have every right to despise that name, Clara. I walked away from it myself because I refused to participate in the moral rot that grandfather instilled in Grant and the rest of the board. But look at the reality of your current position: Grant is behind bars, yes, but his legal team—funded by offshore accounts hidden deep within the holding company—is preparing a series of countersuits designed to tie up your assets in probate court for the next ten years. They want to exhaust you financially, break your spirit, and force you into a humiliating settlement where Lily gets nothing."

I felt a cold knot tighten in my stomach, because I knew he was right. Even with the federal indictments, the corporate tentacles of Vance Industries were vast, tangled, and defended by pitiless lawyers who specialized in bleeding whistleblowers dry.

"And you think you have the antidote?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"I don't think, Clara. I know," Marcus said, stepping closer and reaching into the inner pocket of his bespoke jacket. He pulled out a heavy, cream-colored envelope sealed with a plain wax stamp—entirely devoid of corporate logos or family crests. "Inside this envelope is the master encryption key to the offshore Cayman accounts Grant used to hide the family's illicit slush funds. With this, not only do you secure every single penny of restitution owed to you and Lily, but you also gain controlling voting shares of Vance Industries. You won't just win this war, Clara. You will own the battlefield."
