Chapter 10 - The Turning Point

Armed with Sarah’s flash drive, my attorney Marcus Vance moved with the speed and precision of a military strike.
Within forty-eight hours of receiving the audio recordings, Marcus had submitted a supplemental emergency brief to the federal prosecutor handling Jason’s embezzlement case, alongside our amended divorce filing.
The evidence completely dismantled Jason’s weak defense. While Jason tried to claim he was merely an unwitting participant pressured by corporate overhead, the audio recordings proved a direct, malicious conspiracy between Jason, Megan, and Eleanor to systematically loot corporate accounts and establish a premeditated plan to frame me—a licensed compliance officer—as the primary scapegoat.
The fallout was catastrophic for the opposing side.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, federal agents executed search warrants on Eleanor’s suburban home and Megan’s rented loft apartment. They seized computers, financial ledgers, and communication logs. Megan’s grandiose social media presence vanished overnight as her accounts were locked down, and Eleanor was forced to cancel her country club membership as her personal bank accounts were frozen under suspicion of accessory to money laundering.
Jason, realizing that his sister had thrown him under the bus just as quickly as he had thrown me under the bus at my birthday party, finally broke down completely.
My phone rang while I was sitting at my kitchen island enjoying a quiet cup of tea. It was an unknown jailhouse number.
I let it ring twice, then tapped accept.
“Clara?” Jason’s voice sounded hollow, broken, and unrecognizable. He sounded like a man who had aged twenty years in three weeks.
“Jason,” I replied neutrally.
“They arrested Megan this morning,” he choked out, a sob catching in his throat. “And federal marshals just served me with a superseding indictment. They’re saying... they’re saying I’m looking at fifteen years minimum.”
I didn't feel a surge of triumph. I didn't feel anger. I just felt a profound, peaceful emptiness.
“You made your choices, Jason,” I said softly. “From the moment you watched your sister rip my dress and humiliate me in front of everyone, and decided to join in rather than protect your wife, you chose your path.”
“I was a coward, Clara!” he wept openly into the phone. “I was scared of Megan, I was scared of losing my lifestyle... please, you’re smart, you know how the compliance codes work. Can’t you talk to the prosecutor? Can’t you help me?”
“No, Jason,” I said firmly. “I spent five years covering for your mistakes, apologizing for your family, and shrinking myself to fit into your toxic world. I am done saving you. Save yourself.”

Before he could scream another plea, I hung up the phone, walked over to the kitchen sink, and washed my hands.
The nightmare was finally coming to an end.
