Chapter 20 - Happily Ever After

Six months later, on a golden autumn afternoon precisely one year after the disastrous birthday party that changed my life forever, I stood on the wooden deck of my cottage.

The air was crisp and sweet with the scent of fallen leaves and woodsmoke. My art studio was bustling with new commissions, my compliance consultancy firm was thriving, and my heart was full of a quiet, radiant joy that words could scarcely capture.

Liam stood behind me on the porch, his arms wrapping gently around my waist, pulling me back against his chest as we watched the sun dip below the tree line, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and gold.

“Penny for your thoughts, artist,” Liam murmured softly, pressing a tender kiss to the top of my head.

I leaned back into his embrace, resting my hands comfortably over his arms, a serene smile spreading across my lips.

“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” I said softly, my voice filled with peace. “How the very things that try to break us often end up building us into who we were always meant to be.”

“Well,” Liam smiled, turning me gently in his arms so I was facing him, his gaze fierce and tender all at once, “whoever you are right now... I happen to think she’s absolute perfection.”

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck, and kissed him deeply—not out of desperation or fear of loss, but out of pure, unadulterated happiness.

The nightmare was long gone, the past was buried, and my future was wide open, bright, and entirely my own. We had reached our happily ever after, and the best part was knowing that I was the author of every single page.
