Chapter 19 - Gallery Night

The downtown art exhibition was a dazzling affair, filled with bright lights, murmuring crowds, elegant music, and walls lined with breathtaking works from local artists.

To my absolute surprise and delight, Liam had secretly submitted my oil painting of the pine trees and open sky into the exhibition’s community showcase category—and it had won second place, adorned with a handsome silver ribbon resting proudly in the corner of the frame.

Standing beside Liam in front of my painting, I laughed as a local gallery owner complimented the texture and emotional depth of the brushwork.

“I still can't believe you submitted this behind my back,” I whispered to Liam with a playful grin as the gallery owner walked away to greet other patrons.

“I believed in your work before you even believed in it yourself,” Liam replied smoothly, his hazel eyes gleaming with affection as he handed me a glass of sparkling cider. “And look at you—you’re shining, Clara.”

I looked around the crowded gallery—at the vibrant art, the supportive friends I had made, the man standing beside me who treated me with absolute respect and adoration, and the deep, unshakable peace anchored firmly in my soul.

I thought back to the girl who had cried on the bathroom floor of a suffocating mansion, clutching a torn dress on her birthday, wondering how she was going to survive. If I could go back in time and whisper one thing to her, I wouldn't tell her to avoid the pain or change the past.

I would tell her to hold her head high, walk out the front door, and trust the fire inside her. Because the moment everything burned down was the exact moment she finally became truly free.
