Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

Two weeks passed in a blur of legal paperwork, quiet mornings at the cottage, and long walks along the nearby wooded trails. I had taken a leave of absence from my corporate job, though the Board of Directors had formally reached out to me through legal counsel, praising my swift whistleblower action and quietly offering me a permanent position as the Chief Compliance Officer—with a significant pay raise—once the internal restructuring was complete.
Jason, meanwhile, was completely spiraling.
Without access to our frozen joint accounts, and with his corporate assets seized pending the federal audit, Jason was forced to move back in with his mother, Eleanor. Megan’s boutique had officially folded after her primary funding source evaporated overnight, leading to massive sibling screaming matches that neighbors happily reported to local gossip groups.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while I was organizing my mother’s letters in the cozy living room, someone pounded heavily on my front door. It wasn't the frantic, desperate knocking of Jason from two weeks ago. This was louder, heavier, and accompanied by the official rustling of papers.
I walked to the window and peered through the blinds. Standing on my porch was a local sheriff’s deputy, flanked by a furious, disheveled Jason and a red-faced Megan.
I took a deep breath, checked that my phone was recording video in my pocket, and opened the door.
“Clara Vance?” the deputy asked, flashing an official badge.
“Yes, officer,” I replied calmly, keeping my posture entirely relaxed.
“We have a formal injunction filed by counsel for Jason Vance regarding disputed marital property and purported theft of corporate-adjacent digital assets,” the deputy said, looking slightly uncomfortable.
Before the deputy could finish, Jason pushed past him, his eyes wild with desperation and rage.
“You stole my hard drive, Clara!” Jason screamed, pointing a shaking finger at my face. “You took my personal encrypted drive from the home office safe! That drive contains proprietary personal files and family archives that belong to me!”
I didn't flinch. I simply looked past Jason to the deputy.
“Officer, Mr. Vance is currently under active federal investigation for wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate forgery,” I said clearly and distinctly, ensuring my voice caught the microphone in my pocket. “Any property inside my residence was legally secured pursuant to my separation filing and my role as a federally recognized whistleblower. Furthermore, Mr. Vance is currently under a strict restraining order prohibiting him from coming within five hundred feet of my person or my residence.”
The deputy’s eyes widened slightly. He turned to Jason, his hand instinctively resting on his utility belt. “Sir, did you not mention there was a restraining order in effect?”
“It’s a bogus order!” Jason shrieked, losing whatever shred of composure he had left. “She’s framing me! She’s a manipulative liar who—”
“Step back from the doorway, sir, or I will place you in handcuffs for violating a judicial restraining order,” the deputy commanded sharply, stepping physically between Jason and me.

Megan grabbed Jason’s arm, pulling him back down the porch steps. “Don’t debase yourself with her, Jason! The bitch is a psycho! Let the courts handle her!”
As the sheriff’s deputy escorted them back to their car, giving Jason a stern warning about further harassment, I watched from the doorway. Megan looked back over her shoulder, her face twisted in pure venom. But for the first time, I didn't feel small. I didn't feel humiliated. I felt entirely, wonderfully free.
