Chapter 15 - The Trial Begins

By early April, the federal criminal trial against Jason and Megan finally commenced in the downtown federal district courthouse.

Although I was not required to attend the trial in person, my legal team advised me to observe the opening statements as a final closure to the chapter. Seated in the back row of the public gallery, wearing a sharp navy pantsuit and sunglasses, I watched the drama unfold.

Jason walked into the courtroom in a standard orange detention jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists and ankles. His hair was thinning, his posture was slumped, and he looked nothing like the arrogant corporate golden boy who had once lorded over boardrooms.

Megan sat at the defense table beside her court-appointed attorney, looking equally miserable. Her expensive designer clothes were gone, replaced by a plain gray prison jumpsuit. She refused to look at Jason, her jaw clenched in bitter resentment.

When the federal prosecutor delivered his opening statement, laying out the meticulous forensic audit, the forged signatures, the Cayman Islands shell companies, and the audio recordings proving their conspiracy to frame an innocent compliance officer, the gavel dropped with absolute finality.

During a brief recess, as marshals were escorting Jason back down the hall toward the holding cells, his eyes scanned the gallery and locked onto mine.

He stopped dead in his tracks for a fraction of a second. The marshals gently nudged him forward, but he turned his head, mouthing a single word across the courtroom: “Please.”

I didn't blink. I didn't smile, and I didn't scowl. I simply held his gaze with calm, unshakeable indifference, then turned my head away to chat quietly with Sarah Jenkins, who had come with me to show her support.

Jason lowered his head and shuffled down the hallway into the darkness of the holding cells.

The man who had watched me get humiliated and sided with his toxic sister had finally discovered the true cost of cowardice. And I was completely, beautifully detached from his fate.
