Chapter 10 - A New Dynasty

Victor Cross stared in stunned disbelief as his two enforcers slowly dropped their weapons to the wooden planks, their hands raised in immediate surrender. The ambush had been reversed in a heartbeat; Cross was no longer the hunter, but the cornered prey.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Vale," Cross spat, his face pale with sudden panic. "Kill me, and my captains will tear this city apart brick by brick. Every cop, every councilman, every judge on my payroll will turn on you."

Adrian walked slowly toward him, stopping just inches away. Despite the height difference, Adrian towered over Cross through sheer presence alone. "Your captains are currently receiving visits from my security team," Adrian said coldly. "And your councilmen? They've already received new instructions. This city belongs to the Vales, Victor. It always has. You just forgot the rules."

Adrian turned his head slightly, locking eyes with Maeve across the clearing. The tension of the syndicate war, the ghosts of the past, the poison, the betrayals—all of it melted away in the damp Chicago wind. There was an unspoken understanding between them, forged in locked rooms and broken doors, that could never be undone.

"Take him away," Adrian ordered, not breaking eye contact with Maeve. "Put him on a cargo ship heading south. If I ever hear his name in Illinois again, make sure the last thing he hears is a heavy steel door locking behind him."

Marcus and the guards moved in, hauling Cross toward the back of the town car as he cursed and thrashed uselessly against their grip. Within moments, the vehicle roared to life and sped away into the foggy night, leaving Adrian and Maeve alone on the pier.

The silence that followed was peaceful, punctuated only by the gentle lapping of the lake against the pylons.

Adrian took a slow step closer to Maeve, his hardened expression softening into something remarkably warm. "You know, Ms. Kessler," he said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur, "most people spend their entire lives running away from locked doors. You seem to make a career out of breaking them open."

"Locked doors are just cowards hiding behind wood," Maeve replied, a slow, satisfied smile spreading across her face. She pulled her taped steel crowbar slightly out of its holster, tapping it gently against her palm before sliding it back into place. "And this city had far too many cowards hiding in it when I started this shift."

Adrian let out a genuine, rich laugh—the kind that completely dismantled his dangerous aura, making him look not like a ruthless syndicate boss, but simply a man who had finally found his equal. He extended his hand, palm up, toward her.

Maeve didn't hesitate. She placed her hand in his, feeling the steady, confident grip of a man ready to build a new empire by her side. The war was over, the traitors were gone, and for the first time in their lives, neither of them had any reason to fear what lay behind the next closed door.
