Chapter 16 - The Siege of the North Side Docks

The rain hammered down against the corrugated steel roofs of the North Side shipping district, turning the asphalt into a slick, mirror-like expanse that reflected the amber glow of distant sodium vapor lamps. Inside Warehouse 4, the air smelled of salt, diesel, and raw tension. Marcus crouched behind a stack of wooden crates, his tactical radio softly hissing with static as the encrypted feed from the estate’s subterranean comms hub relayed the movements of the incoming convoy.
"They’ve cleared the perimeter check," Marcus whispered into his comms unit, his eyes fixed on the rain-streaked windows overlooking the loading bay. "Three black SUVs. No headlights. They’re moving like a tactical unit, not local thugs. They brought heavy ordinance."
Across the warehouse floor, Maeve Kessler stood motionless in the shadows, her charcoal suit jacket removed and her sleeves rolled up to her forearms. In her right hand, she rested the familiar, cold weight of her steel crowbar. Beside her, Adrian Vale adjusted the cuffs of his dark shirt, a suppressed automatic pistol resting comfortably in his holster. There was no trace of the vulnerability he had shown during his grand mal seizure weeks ago; he was the apex predator of Chicago, calm, methodical, and entirely lethal.
"Let them breach the perimeter doors," Adrian instructed quietly, his voice carrying clearly over the patter of rain against the metal siding. "We give them twenty seconds to realize they walked into a slaughterhouse, then we seal every exit."
Outside, the screech of tires echoed off the concrete as the convoy slammed to a halt in front of the primary loading gates. Heavy boots hit the pavement. Shouts bounced off the corrugated walls in the damp night air. The Saint Louis syndicate had sent their elite enforcement wing, underestimating the defensive network Maeve had spent the last month architecting.

"They’re hitting the main lock," Marcus warned, tracking the thermal signatures clustering against the heavy iron doors on the north wall.
Maeve stepped closer to the shadows, feeling the familiar, low hum of adrenaline in her blood. For years, she had stood on the wrong side of locked doors, waiting for someone else to decide whether she lived or died. Tonight, she owned the room. She looked at Adrian, and a silent, fierce understanding passed between them. The syndicate wanted to tear down their empire. They were about to find out what happened when the door finally kicked back.
