Chapter 15 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn, the Vale estate's subterranean communications hub was operating at maximum capacity. The Saint Louis syndicate thought they were moving in the shadows, but with Agent Sarah Vance’s federal intelligence feed plugged directly into Maeve’s security terminals, every move their rivals made was broadcast in high definition across the glowing monitors.
Marcus stood beside the main console, tapping away at a secondary keyboard as tactical readouts scrolled across the screen. "Perimeter defenses are locked down across all three district properties. The North Side docks are prepped. If Saint Louis tries a coordinated strike tonight, they’ll walk straight into a crossfire."
"They won't just try a strike," Maeve said, leaning over the console with her eyes locked on a thermal feed of a convoy heading toward the city limits. "They're bringing their entire command unit. They want a decisive victory before dawn."
Adrian stepped into the control room, holding two cups of black coffee. He handed one to Maeve, his fingers brushing hers briefly. There was no hesitation left between them, no lingering doubts, only the cold, sharp clarity of partners ready for war.
"Let them come," Adrian said quietly, his voice carrying absolute authority. "We've locked every door they could possibly use to hide behind. Tonight, Chicago settles its accounts."
Maeve took a slow sip of the hot coffee, then reached down, unbuckling her holster and testing the weight of her steel crowbar one last time before sliding it back into place. The storm was coming, but for the first time in her life, she wasn't running from what lay behind the closed doors. She was the one holding the handle.

And when the door finally opened, it would be on her terms.
