Chapter 18 - The Inner Sanctum Breach

While the warehouse floor erupted into localized tactical skirmishes, Adrian Vale moved with chilling composure toward the administrative office overlooking the loading bay. The heavy oak door of the office was locked from the inside—a makeshift command post set up by the Saint Louis advance team’s tactical lead, a ruthless enforcer known simply as Vance’s former second-in-command, a man named Henderson.

Adrian didn't bother knocking. He raised his suppressed automatic pistol, aimed directly at the heavy brass locking mechanism, and squeezed the trigger twice. The metal shattered in a shower of sparks. With a swift kick of his boot, Adrian sent the door crashing inward.

Henderson spun around from the radio console, his hand scrambling for his sidearm. "Vale—"

Adrian’s shot was instantaneous, precise, and absolute. The bullet clipped Henderson’s shoulder, spinning him hard against the console and sending his weapon clattering across the desk.

"You thought you could buy out my guards, compromise my archives, and take over my city while I was recovering in a sickbed," Adrian said, stepping over the threshold and closing the distance between them with predatory grace. He pressed the cold barrel of his pistol directly beneath Henderson's chin. "You forgot one fundamental rule about Chicago real estate, Henderson. Everything belongs to the house."

"The syndicate... won't stop with me," Henderson choked out, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth as he stared up into Adrian’s dead-eyed gaze. "Saint Louis has half the federal judiciary in their pocket. Even if you kill me, the indictments are already signed."

"Let them sign whatever they want," Adrian replied coldly. "Agent Vance already gave us the list of every corrupt federal official on their payroll. By sunrise, your bosses won't have a government to hide behind."

Outside the office, the gunfire began to taper off as Marcus’s security units systematically dismantled the remaining pockets of resistance. The Saint Louis advance unit had been thoroughly, decisively neutralized. The war for Chicago was reaching its final, inevitable conclusion.
