Chapter 19 - Dawn Over the Skyline

By 5:00 A.M., the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, washed Chicago skyline that shimmered under the pale gray light of early dawn. Inside the subterranean communications hub of the Vale estate, Agent Sarah Vance’s encrypted federal laptop hummed quietly as data packets poured in from districts across the Midwest.
Marcus stood beside the main console, hitting the final execution key that uploaded the complete file of federal corruption, financial routing, and Saint Louis syndicate communications directly to every independent newsroom and uncorrupted federal task force in the country.
"The leaks are live," Marcus announced, turning away from the glowing screens with a satisfied smirk. "Federal marshals are already raiding the Saint Louis safehouses across state lines. Their command structure has completely collapsed."
Maeve stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding a warm cup of black coffee. Her charcoal suit was immaculate once more, save for a faint smudge of dust on her sleeve. She looked down at the bustling streets of the Loop below. No sirens echoed through the canyon of skyscrapers; the city was waking up to a new, quiet reality—one where the old shadows had been permanently scrubbed away.
Adrian walked up behind her, setting his own cup down on the stainless-steel counter. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing against her hand. There was no hesitation between them now, no barriers left unaddressed.
"You saved my life behind that locked bedroom door six months ago, Maeve," Adrian said softly, his voice carrying a warmth that few ever heard. "And tonight, you secured an empire."
May you like
"I didn't do it for an empire," Maeve replied, turning her head to look into his dark, steady eyes. "I did it because I’m done running from locked doors."
Adrian smiled, a genuine, unburdened expression that transformed his fierce countenance. "Then I suppose it's a good thing we don't have any left in this house."
