Chapter 1 - The Voice Nobody Heard

The summer breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate, but to seven-year-old Lily, the mansion felt like a glittering cage.

It had been fourteen excruciating months since her mother, Clara, vanished without a trace. The police had called it a missing person case, then a cold case, and eventually a tragic departure. Everyone told Lily that her mother had simply walked away, overwhelmed by stress or fleeing her own secrets. But Lily knew better. Every night, while the house slept, Lily would sit by her bedroom window, staring down at the sprawling backyard and the newly built, pristine swimming pool.

Lily had told her father, Ethan Vance, a hundreds of times. She had told her grandmother, her teachers, and the child psychologist her father hired to help her "process her grief."

"Mommy didn't leave," Lily would whisper, her tear-stained face pressed against her father’s chest. "She's still here, Daddy. Underneath. She calls for me when the moon is bright."

Ethan’s heart broke a little more each time he heard those words. He loved his daughter fiercely, but he was drowning in his own grief and exhaustion. The doctors assured him that Lily was projecting her trauma onto the house, inventing a fantasy to cope with the reality that her mother had abandoned them.

Then came Evelyn Reed.

Evelyn was elegant, polished, and attentive. She entered Ethan’s life like a breath of fresh air during his darkest hour. She was sympathetic to Lily’s pain, bringing the girl quiet gifts and offering gentle comfort. To Ethan, Evelyn was a second chance at stability and healing. But to Lily, Evelyn was a predator in designer clothing.

Whenever Ethan wasn't looking, Evelyn’s warm smile faded into a cold, sharp gaze. "You're a very foolish little girl, Lily," Evelyn would whisper softly while braiding the child’s hair. "Your mother isn't coming back. And if you keep telling stories, people will think you're crazy."

The psychological weight on Lily grew heavier as the months turned into a year. The quiet villa became a battleground of whispered warnings and suppressed tears. Every time Lily tried to point toward the glass tiles surrounding the pool, Evelyn was there to smoothly redirect Ethan’s attention, offering a soft sigh of pity for the poor, traumatized child.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, lighting the sky in shades of bruised purple and gold, the patio was decorated with white roses and fairy lights. Ethan was hosting an intimate sunset gathering for close friends and family.

Tonight, he was planning to ask Evelyn to be his wife.
