Chapter 4 - The Leap into the Unknown

"Lily, please, step away from the edge," Ethan begged, his voice dropping into a desperate plea as he took a cautious step forward.

"If you marry her, Mommy will be trapped forever," Lily cried, tears blinding her eyes as she took another step backward. Her foot slipped on the wet tile at the pool's rim.

"Lily!" Ethan screamed.

Lily lost her balance, her arms flailing as she plummeted into the eight-foot-deep turquoise pool. The loud splash shattered the night silence, sending rippling waves across the surface.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He stripped off his blazer and plunged headfirst into the water after his daughter.

The cool water engulfed him immediately. Through the clear, illuminated blue pool, Ethan caught Lily around the waist and kicked upward, breaking the surface. Lily coughed and sputtered, clinging frantically to his neck.

"I've got you, baby, I've got you," Ethan panted, swimming toward the shallow steps and carrying her onto the deck.

Guests rushed forward with towels, but Ethan brushed them aside, sitting on the wet stone with Lily shivering in his arms. Evelyn rushed over, her face a mask of frantic concern.

"Thank God she's alright!" Evelyn cried, reaching out to take Lily. "Let me take her inside, Ethan. You're soaked. I'll get her warm and tucked into bed."

As Evelyn leaned down, her shadow blocked the bright underwater LED light that illuminated the deep end of the pool.

From his seated position near the water's surface, Ethan happened to glance down into the water where the pool's bottom drain met the back wall. Because of the disturbed surface and the specific angle of the underwater lighting reflected through his wet vision, he noticed something strange.

Near the base of the deep end wall, buried beneath the decorative underwater mosaic, there was an unnatural outline—a rectangular seam in the reinforced fiberglass that didn't belong in the original pool blueprints.

And caught in the intake grate near the bottom, illuminated by the halogen glow, was a glint of metallic gold tangled in a dark strand of fabric.

Ethan’s breathing hitched. His blood ran cold.

He stared at the glint. It was a distinctive gold charm—a tiny horseshoe—the exact twin of the charm Clara had worn on her bracelet every day of her life.

Ethan slowly lifted his head to look at Evelyn. For the first time in fourteen months, he saw past her polished smile. He saw the subtle, frantic twitch in her jaw and the cold, recalculating terror hiding behind her eyes.

"Ethan?" Evelyn asked, her voice faltering slightly. "What's wrong?"

Ethan gently set Lily down on a lounge chair and wrapped a towel around her shoulders. He looked his daughter directly in the eyes.

"Stay right here, Lily," he whispered softly.

"Daddy, what are you doing?" she sobbed.

Ethan took a deep, steadying breath, turned around, and dived back into the deep end of the pool.
