Chapter 3 - The Broken Promise

A stunned silence fell over the lawn. The soft murmur of the pool water trickling through the filters was the only sound left in the night air.

Evelyn’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second before a mask of profound sorrow replaced her alarm. She took a step back, covering her mouth with her hand, letting out a soft, heartbroken sigh.

"Oh, sweet child..." Evelyn gasped softly, her eyes welling with ready tears. She looked at the guests with an expression of deep pity. "Ethan, please don't be angry with her. She’s overwhelmed. We knew this night would be hard on her."

Ethan felt a terrible pang in his chest. "Lily," he whispered, placing his hands on her small shoulders. "We’ve talked about this. Mommy left us a long time ago. Miss Evelyn loves you. She wants to help us build a happy life."

"NO! SHE'S LYING!" Lily shrieked, struggling against her father’s grip. "I saw her! The night Mommy went away, I heard them arguing out here! Evelyn pushed her into the old pump basement under the patio! Then the pool builders came and poured concrete over the secret door!"

The guests began to murmur uncomfortably, exchanging uneasy glances. Ethan felt a hot flush of embarrassment and grief wash over him. He looked up at Evelyn, whose eyes were wide with innocent horror.

"Ethan, this is heartbreaking," Evelyn said softly, stepping closer to Ethan and offering a comforting hand. "The poor baby has created a whole nightmare in her mind to cope with Clara's absence. Maybe we should postpone tonight. She needs her rest... or her medication."

"She didn't run away!" Lily sobbed, pulling the silver pendant from around her neck and holding it out. "Mommy left this on the counter before she was grabbed! Evelyn took Mommy's keys! She took her car and drove it to the train station so you'd think she left!"

Ethan froze. The mention of the car raised a phantom memory—a strange detail from the police investigation that had never quite made sense. But before he could process it, Evelyn knelt next to Lily, her voice trembling with emotion.

"Lily, my darling, I know how much you miss your mother," Evelyn said softly, reaching out to touch Lily's hair. "I miss her too. She was my friend. But making up terrible stories won't bring her back."

Lily slapped Evelyn's hand away with all the strength her seven-year-old body possessed. "DON'T TOUCH ME! YOU HORRIBLE MONSTER!"

"Lily! That's enough!" Ethan snapped, his patience finally breaking under the weight of public humiliation and sorrow.

Lily looked at her father with a heartbroken expression that cut through him like a blade. "You promised to protect us," she whimpered, backing away toward the edge of the deep end of the pool. "You promised you'd always listen to me, Daddy. But you believed her instead of your own daughter."
