Chapter 7 - The Dark Below

The powerful beam of white light cut through the dark, murky void beneath the pool deck.
Ethan crawled through the narrow, broken opening, ignoring the sharp edges of concrete cutting through his wet shirt. The air inside was heavy, thick, and ice-cold, smelling of damp lime and stagnant water.
"Clara?" Ethan whispered, his voice trembling in the pitch-black chamber. "Clara!"
The space was a narrow concrete corridor, part of the old house's original drainage foundation that had been closed off during the pool construction. At the far end of the tunnel stood a heavy, rusted steel fire door that had been chained shut and sealed around the frame with fresh industrial spray foam.
Ethan crawled forward on his hands and knees, the flashlight beam shaking wildly in his grip.
He reached the steel door. The chain was secured with a heavy padlocked latch. Dropped on the muddy ground right in front of the door was Clara’s leather handbag, covered in mold, its contents spilled across the damp dirt.
Ethan gasped, a ragged sob tearing from his throat. He picked up the bag. Inside was Clara's driver's license, her credit cards, and a small, half-finished crayon drawing Lily had made for her the day she disappeared.
Clara hadn't left the house. She had never left the property.
"Oh God... oh God, Clara..." Ethan wept, pressing his forehead against the cold, rusted steel door.
Suddenly, from the other side of the thick metal barrier, Ethan heard a sound that made his heart stop entirely.
It wasn't silence. It was a faint, rhythmically scraping sound.
Scratch. Scratch. Scratch.
Ethan froze, his breath catching in his throat. He pressed his ear directly against the cold steel frame.

From deep within the hollow, insulated vault behind the wall, a weak, raspy, barely audible voice whimpered through a small, hidden air ventilation pipe that led upward into the garden hollow.
"...Ethan?"
