Chapter 13 - The Crimson Corridor

The red emergency strobe pulsed erratically against the walls of the executive suite as Marcus kicked the mahogany chair aside, splintering the wood with a deafening crack. "You can't hide in a glass cage forever, Harper!" Marcus snarled, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as he stalked around the desk like a starving wolf. Harper pressed her back hard against the soundproofed wall, her fingers frantically pressing the hidden brass toggle beneath the desk's inner lining. If the signal reached the top floor, Vincent would be down here in less than ninety seconds. But ninety seconds felt like an eternity when a blade was inches away. Marcus lunged forward, his heavy hand grabbing a handful of her silk blouse and hauling her violently to her feet. "Your little billionaire protector isn't here to save you this time," Marcus hissed, his breath hot and reeking of stale whiskey as he raised the jagged hunting knife toward her chest. Without a moment's hesitation, Harper channeled every ounce of the fierce, unyielding survival instinct she had forged in the crucible of her new life. Instead of shrinking away, she drove her heel directly down onto his instep with all her weight, twisting it viciously. Marcus roared in sudden agony, his grip slackening for a fraction of a second. That was all the opening she needed. Breaking free from his grasp, Harper whipped her hand out of her pocket, unholstering the compact firearm, and slammed the heavy metal butt of the gun squarely against the side of his jaw. Marcus staggered backward, stunned, crashing hard into a glass display shelf that shattered into a million glittering fragments across the floor.
Before Marcus could recover his footing, the heavy reinforced double doors at the end of the corridor blasted open with a deafening metallic crash. Vincent Vance stood in the threshold, flanked by two armed tactical operatives in full body armor. The expression on Vincent’s face was no longer merely cold or calculated; it was the terrifying, apocalyptic wrath of an apex predator whose absolute domain had been defiled. His dark eyes locked onto Marcus, who was just beginning to push himself up from the glass-strewn floor. "Kill him," Vincent commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that cut through the silence of the storm like a razor. The tactical guards moved with terrifying, machine-like synchronization, but Marcus, realizing he was entirely outmatched, lunged toward the floor-to-ceiling window with a desperate, suicidal roar, smashing through the reinforced glass just as a volley of non-lethal suppression rounds zipped through the air. The sound of shattering glass competed with the howling wind outside as Marcus plunged out into the stormy Chicago night, disappearing into the torrential rain forty stories above the street. The heavy silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the distant patter of rain and the harsh, ragged breathing of Harper as she lowered her shaking weapon. Vincent crossed the vast office in three long, predatory strides, ignoring the shattered glass entirely as he reached her side, his strong hands gripping her shoulders with an intensity that bordered on fierce desperation. "Harper," he breathed, his voice cracking slightly as his dark eyes searched her face for any sign of injury. "Are you hurt?"
