Chapter 9 - Smoke and Steel

The upper-floor security monitors painted a grim, cinematic picture of violence unfolding in the bowels of Vance Tower. On the main screen in the penthouse, Harper watched with bated breath as Vincent’s tactical team moved through the industrial gray corridors of the sub-basement with military precision. The Moretti operatives, clad in tactical gear and carrying suppressed submachine guns, had forced their way past the secondary security door, only to find themselves completely boxed in by Vance's heavy enforcers. The ensuing firefight was short, brutal, and utterly one-sided. Within three minutes, two of the intruders were pinned to the concrete floor in zip-ties, while the third had managed to retreat toward the maintenance stairwells—straight into the path of Vincent Vance himself. Harper stood by the massive glass console, her knuckles white as she gripped her crutches for support. Elena stood beside her, utterly unfazed, calmly tapping away on her tablet to isolate the building's internal comms feed. "Audio on," Harper whispered. Elena nodded and tapped a single icon on the screen. The harsh, metallic acoustics of the stairwell flooded the penthouse speakers. Heavy boots echoed against concrete. Then, a muffled scuffle, followed by the sickening crunch of bone against steel railing. "Tell Dante," Vincent’s voice rang out through the speakers—cold, steady, and laden with lethal menace—"that if he ever sends his dogs into my building again, I won't just send their bodies back to the North Side. I'll burn his entire operation to the ground down to the last ash." A strangled, pain-filled gasp answered him, followed by a heavy thud as an unconscious body hit the floor. The audio feed went quiet, save for the hum of the ventilation system. Harper exhaled a breath she felt like she had been holding for an hour, her knees trembling slightly beneath her. The sheer, terrifying power of the man who had rescued her from that miserable Chicago apartment was staggering. He wasn't just a businessman; he was an apex predator ruling a kingdom of shadows. Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed softly. The doors slid open to reveal Vincent. His suit jacket was off, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing lean, corded muscle. There was a faint smudge of soot on his collar, but otherwise, he looked as composed as if he had just stepped out of a boardroom meeting. He walked straight toward Harper, his dark eyes softening the moment they locked onto hers. "It's over," Vincent said quietly, stopping a foot away. "The message has been delivered. Moretti will stay in his lane." Harper looked up at him, a complex mixture of fear, awe, and an undeniable, swelling warmth blooming in her chest. Without thinking, she dropped her crutch, let herself lean forward, and wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against his chest. Vincent froze for a fraction of a second, completely caught off guard, before his strong, heavy arms came around her, pulling her flush against his solid frame in a fierce, protective embrace that shut out the rest of the dangerous world.
