Chapter 8 - The North Side Incursion

The red alarm pulsed rhythmically against the glass walls of the penthouse, casting a bloody hue over the polished walnut and steel interior. Vincent spun around on his heel, his face hardening into an expression of absolute, merciless granite. He strode to the master terminal with predatory speed, his fingers tapping commands onto the holographic keyboard with practiced efficiency. "It's not a digital breach anymore," Vincent murmured, his eyes scanning the fast-moving data feeds. "It's a physical probe. They’ve compromised the ground-floor security checkpoint in the underground parking garage." Harper’s heart hammered frantically against her ribs. The sanitized luxury of the tower vanished in an instant, replaced by the grim reality of the violent underworld operating just beneath the city's gleaming surface. "Who is it?" Harper asked, her voice tight with strain. "Moretti’s enforcers," Elena answered coolly, stepping forward with a tablet displaying live security feeds from the sub-levels. "Three armed operatives, disguised as corporate couriers. They bypassed the initial badge scanner using cloned credentials. They're heading directly toward the freight elevators—the only route that provides direct access to the executive core." Vincent didn't hesitate for a single second. He reached into his inner vest pocket, pulling out a heavy, matte-black encrypted satellite phone, barking a series of rapid, concise orders to his tactical commanders stationed on the lower floors. "Seal the sub-basement bulkheads. Route the elevators to the lobby and lock the mechanisms. Do not engage lethally unless they draw first—I want at least one of them alive to deliver a message to Don Moretti." He snapped the phone shut and turned his attention back to Harper. The raw, protective intensity in his dark eyes was absolute. "You are staying right here in the penthouse panic room," Vincent ordered, his tone brooking no argument. "Elena will secure the perimeter. I am going down to handle this personally." Harper grabbed his sleeve before he could turn away, her fingers gripping the expensive fabric of his suit jacket with desperate strength. "No, Vincent—it's a trap. They want to draw you out of the secure core." Vincent looked down at her hand, a faint, dark smile touching the corner of his lips. "Let them try, Harper. It's been a long time since Dante Moretti tested my patience." With a swift, decisive movement, he pried her fingers loose, turned on his heel, and strode toward the private elevator, leaving Harper and Elena alone as the heavy steel doors slid shut behind him.
