Chapter 6 - The Forty-Second Floor

The private elevator chime echoed softly through the vaulted car as the doors slid apart to reveal the sprawling expanse of the forty-second floor of Vance Tower. Harper Reed stepped out beside Vincent Vance, her carbon-fiber cast clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble flooring. The entire floor was a masterclass in modern architecture and absolute power; floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered an unobstructed, breathtaking panorama of the Chicago skyline cutting through the gray morning fog, while soundproofed glass perimeter offices hummed with quiet, high-stakes corporate efficiency. Elena was already waiting by a sleek mahogany reception desk, her silver-streaked hair immaculate, holding a leather-bound portfolio. "Good morning, Ms. Reed," Elena greeted, her tone crisp and professional, though a subtle warmth flickered in her eyes. "Your office is fully prepared, and your communications team is standing by for the morning briefing." Harper felt a momentary wave of imposter syndrome wash over her—just a week ago, she had been trapped on a freezing linoleum floor with a shattered leg, praying for rescue. Now, she was stepping into an executive suite as Director of Corporate Communications for an empire that spanned half the Midwest. She turned to look at Vincent, whose imposing frame and sharp gray suit radiated quiet authority. "You earned this desk, Harper," Vincent said softly, his dark eyes meeting hers with unwavering certainty. "Don't ever doubt your capacity to command." Yet, beneath the polished corporate veneer of the morning, the heavy shadow of the encrypted alert from the basement garage still hung in the air. Vincent had left explicit instructions with his cyber-intelligence division to trace the unauthorized ping on Tyler Bennett’s relocation file. As Elena led Harper toward her spacious corner office—complete with custom minimalist furniture, a private terminal, and views overlooking Lake Michigan—she couldn't shake the chilling realization that her old life was desperately trying to claw its way back into her new one. By noon, Harper was deep into reviewing a series of public relations drafts for the Vance Foundation’s upcoming inner-city youth initiatives, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced ease. The work was demanding, analytical, and entirely absorbing, serving as a welcome distraction from the lingering trauma in her bones. But peace in the Chicago syndicate never lasted long. Around two o'clock, the internal comms console on her desk buzzed sharply. It was Vincent’s private line. "Harper," his deep, gravelly voice came through the speaker, devoid of its usual calm. "Get to my office on the top floor immediately. Elena is coming to escort you." Before Harper could ask a single question, the secure line clicked dead, leaving only the dial tone echoing in her pristine, sunlit office.
