Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Database

The executive penthouse on the top floor of Vance Tower was a fortress of glass, steel, and ruthless strategy. When Elena escorted Harper into the sprawling office, Vincent was standing by the massive panoramic window, his broad shoulders tense beneath his tailored suit jacket, staring down at the ant-like flow of traffic on Michigan Avenue. A massive wall-mounted digital display behind his oversized walnut desk flickered with complex streams of encrypted data, firewall bypass logs, and regional IP addresses. "Close the door, Elena," Vincent commanded without turning around. Once the heavy oak door clicked shut, sealing them in absolute privacy, Vincent turned his gaze toward Harper. The cold, predatory edge in his eyes had intensified tenfold. "The ping on Bennett’s relocation file wasn't a random data leak or a stray query from a curious bureaucrat," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. "It was a targeted, deep-level extraction attempt originating from a secure server owned by the Moretti syndicate—our primary rival on the North Side." Harper’s breath hitched, her hand instinctively resting against the polished arm of her crutch. "The Morettis? But... why would they care about Tyler Bennett? He’s nobody. Just a small-time mechanic from the South Side." "They don't care about Bennett," Vincent replied, stepping closer, his imposing presence filling the room. "They care about the person Bennett was connected to on the night of his disappearance. They know an unscheduled extraction occurred at his address. They know my private vehicle was logged at the scene. And most importantly... they know I brought a civilian back to this tower." Panic fluttered in Harper’s chest, sharp and suffocating. The illusion of safety she had built over the last few days fractured like thin ice over a winter lake. "They're looking for me," she whispered, the words tasting like ash. "They want to use me to get to you." Vincent stopped just inches away from her, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unyielding ferocity. He reached out, his warm fingers lightly brushing her shoulder in a gesture of absolute grounding. "They can look all they want, Harper. But looking is all they will ever do," Vincent vowed, his voice a dark promise that brooked no argument. "No one touches what belongs to Vance Holdings. And no one touches you." Suddenly, the massive digital wall display behind Vincent flashed red, a shrill alarm piercing the quiet air of the penthouse as a new, high-priority alert bypassed their outer firewall with terrifying speed.
