Chapter 23 - The Midnight Breach

The Marlowe County Courthouse loomed out of the fog like a monolithic stone beast, its neoclassical pillars shadowed against a bruised, starless sky. Tessa killed the truck's headlights a block away, coasting it into a service alley behind the Hall of Records. We slipped out, hugging the deep stone shadows until we reached the heavy wrought-iron maintenance door. My heart hammered against my ribs as I pressed Cole’s stolen tactical token against the biometric scanner. For three agonizing seconds, the little screen flashed a violent amber *ACCESS DENIED*. "Rachel, hurry, a patrol car is turning the corner," Tessa hissed, pulling me back into the recess of the doorway. I swore under my breath, swiping the token again and manually inputting the root password I had memorized from the sub-basement server rack. *BEEP.* The green light blinked, and the heavy steel door clicked open with a muffled mechanical pop. We ducked inside just as the sweep of a cruiser’s spotlight raked across the alleyway. The interior of the courthouse was dead silent, smelling of old paper, floor wax, and impending doom. We moved with practiced stealth up the grand marble staircase, bypassing the public halls and heading straight for the Chief Administrator’s terminal on the third floor—the very heart of the county's emergency routing network. The air grew colder the higher we climbed, every footstep echoing like a gunshot in the cavernous hallway, bringing us one step closer to the final confrontation.
